City approves dog control ordinance by wide vote

A dog control ordinance passed 239 to 69 in a public vote on Tuesday. The measure bans dogs running at large on all city streets and public grounds and requires vaccination and tagging even for penned dogs. Election judge David Nicholson and clerks Lee Fulton Robert Noble Jr. and E. M. McBee oversaw voting at City Hall.

Terry County Farm Bureau Queen Contest Committees Meet

Committees for the Terry County Farm Bureau queen contest will meet at 2 p.m. today at the South Plains Health Unit to finalize plans for the Aug 30 event at Brownfield High School auditorium. The entry foods program decorations and publicity groups will attend with officials noting the official entry blank is in this edition on See No 1 Page 6.

Ruth League Nears Season End

In a 8 8 tie at Lions Club Park the Pirates and Tigers battled through 9 innings and beyond as Doug Coppock fanned 4 in 7 innings for the Tigers and Jim Howell held the Tigers to 5 hits while hitting a three run homer. Eddie Gutierrez of the Red Sox pitched a one hitter against the Yankees in a 6 3 victory with Johnny Murphy belting a homer for the winners.

Brownfield Babe Ruth Team Falls Short in District Final

Brownfield's Babe Ruth squad lost to the Sundown-Levelland North Division 8 to 3 in Levelland Friday night. Eddie Gutierrez pitched four impressive hits, while Doug Coppock and Chuck Anderson fueled seven Brownfield hits with three and two hits respectively. Coppock also homered Thursday as Johnny Murphy scored four runs in the win.

Mickey Mouse to Visit New Kindergarten This Fall

Opening dates set for Mick n Minn Kinder garten at 595 East Repp to welcome four to six year olds. Operated by Mrs. Oliver Grote the program will use unit based lessons and include report cards to teach responsibility in communication.

Wages for Cotton Hand Labor in Terry Range

U S Labor Department telegram to Aubrey Jones TEC manager lists cotton hoeing pay from 5 to 60 cents per hour for mixed crews. Ed McDonald Dallas signed the wire as director of Employment Security Bureau. Jones said more hoe hands are available and farmers should contact the TEC office in the courthouse.

Anti-Polio Vaccine Use Expands in Brownfield

County health officer Dr. A H Daniell says anti polio vaccine efforts are very satisfactory. About 285 adults and a similar number in doctors offices have begun or completed shots via the Terry Yoakum Polio Foundation funded by March of Dimes. Immunization clinics run 1 to 4 30 p m each Wednesday at SPHU and local physicians offices have ample vaccine.

Genell Cornett daughter of Earl and Mrs Cornett of Route 5 was named to the 4H Electric Camp Council in the closing session at Lubbock Friday. She was one of six officers elected from District 2 covering about 20 South Plains counties. Attending from Terry included Jeannie Solsberry Linda Henson Jackie Dillson Freddie Pickett and Hilbern Briscoe. Jim Foy and Bob Etheredge accompanied the group.

Little League All Star Team Named for District Tournament

Tuesday 15 Brownfield youths earned spots on the Little League All Star squad to compete in District 3 at Slaton beginning Monday. Pre-game ceremonies awarded caps and the group will open district play at 5 p.m. against Denver City on Slaton’s diamond.
