Local school budgets rose by 2.7 billion over two years after HB 72 with funding split between state aid and local property taxes. In 1985 86 districts levied a record 551 million in property taxes for a 4.6 billion total. Brownfield Wellman Union Meadow districts posted notable tax changes and per student spending varied widely.

The NEWS, at the request of State Representative Rudd, asks Brownfield residents to rank solutions to a potential $3 billion Texas budget shortfall. The public survey, published July 23 and rerun on page 2A, requests input by July 31 and will be reported to Rep. Rudd and governors.
Brownfield High School awarded diplomas to 120 seniors on May 29. One 1986 graduate Veronica Gonzales plans to attend McMurry College in Abilene this fall to pursue a better education, play volleyball, and join the track team as a walk on.
