William Brown postmaster announces postal workers will extend hours by 30 minutes on Saturdays without cost to taxpayers. Parcel Post and Stamps and General Delivery windows stay open until 12 30 p m, with the post office remaining closed all day Saturday. The change aims to aid workers needing after morning access per a national ruling.
The Terry County Sheriff's Posse hosts a three day Brownfield rodeo starting Thursday with eight events including bareback and bull riding. A 4 PM parade through town leads to the rodeo grounds west of town, followed by a meal at the County Show Barn. Admission is $1.50 for adults and 60 cents for children under 12. dancing and live music by Jimmy Mackey and his All-Stars close the night.
Police report six rural crashes in Terry County in June with one death, six injuries and $7,650 property damage. Through June 1964 Terry County shows 34 crashes, two dead and 18 injured for $30,645. District 5A June totals reach 261 crashes, 10 deaths, 175 injuries, and $244,976.
Partly cloudy with a slight chance of afternoon and evening thundershowers today. Light to moderate southerly winds 15 to 20 mph, easing to 10 to 15 mph tonight. Monday outlook calls for partly cloudy skies and seasonable temperatures with a few afternoon or nighttime thundershowers over northern and western high plains. Agricultural advisory notes light precipitation under 15 percent of zones, mostly under a quarter inch, with up to half inch in limited areas. Brownfield City Council discussed a proposed Community Antenna Television system to be installed within 120 days if granted. Spokesman Frank Jowell and KTFY Radio colleagues urged a nonexclusive franchise with eight channels, rates likely $5 to $10 monthly, plus tie-on fees, using the radio tower for reception and daytime broadcasting.
Mack Gray from Terry County Soil Conservation spoke at the Four County Agriculture Workers Council meeting in Welch at 7 a.m. on Tuesday about the need for conservation. He emphasized terraces and contour farming to conserve rain in West Texas and reduce erosion after recent washing and runoff. Attendees from Terry County included Dennis Lilly R N McClain and A Bishop. The next meeting is scheduled for August 11 in Lamesa with Paul Gentry of Lamesa as president.
July in Brownfield defies its quiet stereotype as residents encounter unusual events. A radioactive ice cream cone appears, KTFY gains new owners with Bob Sewell as GM, a flying saucer sighting occurs during a backyard cookout, and talk of a new cable TV system resurges at a city council meeting. Rep. Mahon meets leading locals to push post office changes.
A cone said to be radioactive was found by the WG Carter children while cleaning their parents home near Gomer. Civil Defense Director Lewis Simmonds tested it at one millien t grams per hour gamma ray and arranged transport to the district radiation officer in Lubbock for disposal. He warns cones can remain hot for decades and urges discovery reports to Civil Defense.
In Brownfield recent days show calm overall on the law front with few incidents. Larry Bradford drew six months in county jail after pleading guilty to theft under 54 dollars. A man was arrested on a warrant for bigamy with no plea entered. Keys stolen from four Pontiacs on the Bowman Oldsmobile Cadillac Pontiac lot were reported between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m Thursday. Police jailed another man on a liquor law curfew charge. One minor traffic accident occurred near the courthouse square involving a 1962 GMC pickup driven by James Howard Woodward and a 1960 Chevrolet driven by Opal Fall in Barbee.
