Miss Texas Pageant and local rodeo planned for mid summer

Weldon Callaway promotes the Miss South Plains Day for Jane Weiss as a prelude to the Miss Texas Pageant in Fort Worth later this month. The local Brownfield Bank closed to honor W i Tudor's funeral, while plans note theMiss Texas event July 23 to 25 and a big local rodeo.

Weekes Talks To Brownfield Optimist Club

Don Weekes of Lubbock addressed the Brownfield Optimist Club at their Thursday noon meeting. Weekes, a certified skin diving instructor, spoke on skin diving and a desecration of equipment. James W. Evans presided over a brief business session. Charcoal steaks were prepared for about 25 members and two guests by Jimmy Billings.

Parade To Oner Rodeo Festivities

The Terry County Rodeo parade starts at 4 pm on July 23 with entry contact details for Wo Kennedy and Ray Christopher. Fifteen riding clubs join a route from the north town edge to the square and rodeo grounds, followed by three nights of rodeo activities July 23 to 25.

Young Suspects Arrested Here

Brownfield City Police report three youths ages 8 13 charged with burglary and theft. They were questioned and released to parents pending juvenile hearings after taking items from a parked car. Police recovered film three key sets from Andrews Motor Co and a swimsuit. A resident reported a home entry.

Rites Held For Civic Leader and Businessman

Funeral services for WB Red Tudor were held at 2 30 pm Friday at First Baptist Church with Rev Ed Crow officiating. He died at 1 50 am Thursday in Brownfield General Hospital after a stroke. Tudor, 78, was a longtime Brownfield merchant and civic figure, Ford and Buick dealer, bank director and former city council member. He is survived by his wife, two brothers, a sister, seven nephews and three nieces. Pallbearers named.

Services Pending For Rowden Baby

Funeral services are pending for Lee Dale Rowden Jr. infant son of Mr and Mrs Lee I Rowden of Hof Germany. The family will arrive in Brownfield today. The baby was born July 4 and died July . Survivors include his parents one sister at home and grandparents Mr and Mrs Carroll Rowden 902 bh Oak.

Local Couple Die in Auto Accident Near Fredericksburg

Funeral plans are set for Mr. and Mrs. W. G Carter of Gomez after a head on collision at 9:30 am Saturday near Fredericksburg on their way home from visiting son Arthur Ray Carlier of Victoria. Survived by three daughters, three sons, twenty grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters, the Carters were farmers with long service in the Gomez community.

Brownfield Council Grants Street Closure Authority

Brownfield City Council approved closing a rarely used street between 5th and 6th Streets near the Boys' Club. City Manager Eunice Jones stated the action to restrict traffic was for safety and efficiency.

Mrs. Joe H. Henson won the grand prize of 100 dollars in the Brownfield NEWS recipe contest. Consolation prizes of 30 dollars went to Mrs. Kenny Gore, Mrs. Loyd W. Yowell, Mrs. Sawyer A. Toll tragedy near Brownfield claims eight lives

A head on collision 12 miles west of Brownfield on U S Highway 380 at 5 30 a m Saturday killed eight people, all in the Castro car except Primo Luna Ramon who died later. Victims include Pablo Castro 23 and Elena Estrada 19 with others aged 13 to 16. Ramon 34 survived initially but died at Brownfield General Hospital.

Fatal Texas crash toll reaches eleven for year in Terry County

Welding torches used to extricate victims as two cars burned into heaps of wreckage. All are taken to Brownfield Funeral Home with services pending Saturday. Five families mourn, including Estrade siblings and Castro brothers. One fatality occurred inside Brownfield city limits, pushing Terry County’s annual death toll to eleven.

Rotary Club Friday Meeting Highlights

Special guests Miss Jane Weiss Miss South Plains and Miss Emily Risager performed at the Rotary Club gathering with Mr and Mrs George Weiss in attendance Weiss a local member. Mrs Frances Gilliam attended as chaperon for the Miss Texas Pageant in Fort Worth. Howard Davis reported on the International Rotary Convention in Toronto Canada. He represented the local club at the international meeting.

Pioneer Dentist A F Schofield Dies In Bartlett

Dr A F Schofield a Brownfield pioneer dentist died at 1 am Friday in Temple Veterans Hospital after weeks of illness He was 88 Born in Newton Illinois he practiced in Bartlett for 36 years moving in 1923 He brought Texas its first dental X Ray machine and donated equipment to Texas Tech museum Survivors include two sons and seven grandchildren funeral services were held at Goodnight Funeral Home Bartlett with Masonic graveside rites.
