Absentee voting has begun for the Democratic Primary on July 28 as interest rises for a Monday night rally at the Lions Baseball Field. Speakers include candidates Preston Smith Kilmer Corbin and other district and state figures with about 100 attendees at a recent rally in Pool. The event is hosted by the County Home Demonstration Council which will sell cakes and pies to fund 4-H delegates to a Chicago conference.
Two sixteen year olds from Terry County were sent to the State Reformatory at Gatesville by local Juvenile authorities. They previously lived in Brownfield and Lubbock and had not attended school here. Police linked them to two car thefts in Brownfield and later thefts in Lubbock, including a used car from West Broadway, a second car, and a third theft that night. They also admitted to four break ins and stealing small items from Lubbock firms.
Airman of the Month for May is Airman Second Class Ray Douglas, instructor with the 3366th Student Squadron at Amarillo Air Force Base. He and his wife Mildred were honored in appropriate ceremonies. Douglas is the son of Mr and Mrs C Y Douglas of Sundown and formerly served as Pool Baptist church pastor from 1951 to 1954.
Season ticket sales open July 23 in the School Tax office for holders from last year. Six home games are scheduled including Levelland, Littlefield, Plainview, Colorado City, Monahans and Kermit. The opener is September 14 against Levelland.
Carl Golden announced farmers in Terry County will vote Friday July 20 on a two thirds favorable result to establish wheat marketing quotas for 1957. Eligible growers with more than 15 acres can cast ballots at the ASC Office Post Office building. A yes vote enforces quotas and penalties. a no vote means no quotas and 50 percent parity price support for compliant acreage.
Terry county business held steady in the first half of 1456 with tax collections above 1955 and deposits near Brownfield levels. Savings and postal receipts rise modestly while building permits total 572,795 as higher prices and hard money weigh on construction. a good fall harvest could boost activity.
Seventy six transfers for the 1956 57 school year were approved by the Terry County School Board. Most moves involve Brownfield Independent School district with 11 students transferring to Plains and additional transfers to Sundown and Meadow. Brownfield gains one from Union to balance, totaling 66 out and 1 in. Meadow receives three from Brownfield but loses nine including two Nebraska students to Ropesville, and picks up one student from New Home per Lynn County officials.
Flight Verry county four clubbers attend the annual 41 Club encampment at Lat block this week with three sponsors. They plan to return Friday. Standings include Virginia Thornton Alton Car michael Wellman Clara Duncan Jeanie Salsbury Pool Jackie Williams Hilburn Briscoe Guthnsen Brownfield and Jimmy Sarpen Union. Sponsors are Mrs Pauletta Gracey Brownfield Mrs Elyvice Duncan Meadow and County Agent Jim Foy.
County Agent Jim Foy says Terry County farmers embrace whirled grain sorghum as a new era for crops. Rain has limited thrip outbreaks while cotton grows ahead of normal, boosting quality and potential prices. hybrids show 20 to 30 percent yield gains with 5 500 to 6 000 pounds per acre possible on some plots.
A mobile Army exhibit sponsored by the U S Army Recruiting Service will appear at Brownfield County Courthouse on July 4 from 4 30 to 12 00. Sergeant Ray, Army recruiter for the area, says the converted 37 passenger bus showcases uniforms medals insignia equipment and recruiting literature to illustrate opportunities in the Regular Army including branch assignments technical training and possible overseas duties.
Schools prepare for a September five opening with junior high students allowed to adjust schedules. Principal Joe Collum at Jenn Highe School discusses new schedule options while custodians prep desks and a yard crew installs a 75 by 160 yard football practice field north of the stadium. Brownfield schools plan to open September 4.
A Meadow School board of trustees named an equalization board at Monday night’s meeting chaired by Cland Russell. Members include Dr. Smith B. Fk Fine J. T. Fulford and Lewis Peeler. A public meeting is set for August 2 with two vacancies in the Meadow School system for football coach and a primary teacher. Fall registration begins September 3 with classes starting September 3.
Wenzle wins for Berkshire in a rough stock event at Lathrock this week. Berkshire scored 311 inches of hide and weighed 21 000 pounds in a lengthy display, with 143 inch fat back and 5/16 inch pork chops eye muscle measurements.
