Funeral services held for Mrs. Robert B. Helms in Brownfield

Mrs. Robert B. Helms 50 of Plains died after a high speed all roadway accident on U S Highway 380 near Plains. Funeral conducted at First Baptist Church Brownfield with Rev. Bob Robins officiating. Burial at Brownfield Cemetery. Survivors include husband J T Snow son. George Lasiter brother. sisters Mrs A W Willett and Mrs Homer Eubanks.

Women Power at Brownfield Little League Night

July 19 at 7 30 p m Lions Ball Park features Miss Little League of 1956 named and a fast six inning game by Brownfield Little Leaguers mothers. Ten women signed to play or support with 25 cent admission.

Final Rites Held For G. L. Melton

Funeral services were conducted Friday at 5 p.m. for G. L. Melton 64 World War I veteran who died in the Veteran's Hospital at Big Spring after seven weeks of hospitalization. Burial followed in Terry County Memorial cemetery. Melton, a South Plains resident of 15 years and native of Rains county, is survived by his wife two sons Delbert and Cloyes both of Hobbs two daughters Mrs C E Grant of Levelland and Miss Catherine Melton of Brownfield and six grandchildren.

Mayfields plan two week vacation then move to Lovington

Ed and Wilma Mayfield prepare a two week vacation at the Del Coronado Hotel near San Diego before moving to Lovington citing a rare job opportunity. The Stoltz family intends to visit but move permanently for new prospects.

Brownfield church group hosts refreshments and music

Bynum and Masons hosted ice cream and cake for guests as Brownfield’s new singing quartet—B F Hutson, Dale Travis, Alvin Davis, and Roy Priest—performed with Ellington on piano. Rev. Ralph O'Dell of First Presbyterian attended. installation of officers Dennis Lilly, Othel Reeves, and Don Hewitt was planned.

Newell Reed Installed as New Rotary President

Alton Chapman former Rotary District Governor installed Newell Reed as president and Morgan Copeland as vice president in Brownfield. Chapman praised the local club’s community service program and recounted Rotary experiences in New York and Pennsylvania with clubs worldwide. A quartet performed songs as retiring president Johnny Kendrick thanked members for their efforts.

Building Permits Show Slow June Yet Half Million Marker Near

Construction activity continued in June with commercial permits lifting the half year total to 572 795 dollars as residential permits declined from 194 to six new homes year to date. Notable projects include a 10 000 dollar nas enary building and a 18 000 dollar funeral parlor at Brown field.

News-Herald Wins Texas Newspaper Contest

The Brownfield News joined 58 Texas papers as a winner in the 1956 Texas Newspaper contests in Amarillo. The News was judged third in Division PV for weeklies in towns over 5,000. Publisher Curtis Sterling received a certificate of award. The News earned third place in Creruerat ferelligee, Writing, and News Pututes.

Three Day Championship Rodeo Set in Brownfield

The Terry County Sheriff Posse announces a three day championship rodeo in Brownfield on August 30 31 and September 1. The event joins the World Championship tour with top cowboys and cowgirls. publicity chairman Bill Price confirms contracts are signed.
