Kelly Named Editor Of City Paper In Brownfield News

Brownfield publisher Lowell Hunt announced Joe Kelly is the new editor of the News-Herald, succeeding Jerry Jackson who moved to Prescott. Kelly, 22 years in journalism, previously edited sports at the Avalanche-Journal in Lubbock before a stint in life insurance and advertising. He and his wife, a Lubbock musician, plan to move to Brownfield with their two sons.

Sheriff’s Posse Plans Major Rodeo to Begin July 22

The Terry County Sheriff’s Posse announces a three day rodeo July 22 to 24 at the rodeo grounds with entries open until July 21. Red Whatley of Crosbyton is producer, big parade on July 22, free club feed, nightly dances by Ray Christopher and his band, three new members added Alvin Herron Henry Cargill Clinton DeLong, possee to attend parades in O Donnell Denver City and Hereford. Proceeds fund new arena stands.

Brownfield Holiday Sees Quiet 4th Amid Disturbances

Brownfield area reports fireworks disturbances and drunkenness over the July 4 weekend but no charges in most incidents. Four drunks were picked up and fined, five men faced liquor law curfew charges, and a 19 year old faced minor consumption and suspended license charges. One man charged with being drunk in a car and others for minor drinking. George Hights and Donald McElroy cited for discharging firearms near Hubbards Cafe. Vandals broke windows at North Side Baptist Church. tires and bicycle stolen. several DWI cases noted by sheriff and highway patrol.

City Sailor Receives Medal For Viet Nam Service

Airman John M. Pippin, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Pippin of Brownfield Texas, earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service off the coast of Viet Nam aboard the USS Midway in the Seventh Fleet. Midway aircraft carried out daily air strikes against North Viet Nam targets and Viet Cong concentrations. The medal honors 30 or more consecutive days in an area of operations.

County Jail Feeding Costs Report for First Half of 1965

Sheriff Homer Parker reports Terry County jail fed 2 178 prisoners in six months costing 2 030 99 dollars. Average 363 prisoners monthly and 338 49 dollars monthly for food. Daily cost 93 cents per prisoner. March 535 fed at 440 57 dollars, May 221 fed at 208 29 dollars.
