Larry McCullough, housing coordinator and code enforcement officer, describes managing the Community Development Block Grant program a 1.5 million three year effort in the northwest city. He notes about 120 forms per recipient and 14 relocations completed as 70 homes are rehabilitated before next year.
David Martinez 21 Brownfield charged with theft of a vehicle after involvement in the Sunday and Monday pickups thefts. Two 16 year old Brownfield juveniles also implicated. Vehicles recovered in Lubbock and near Brownfield. Martinez jailed in Terry County on 3000 bond. Juveniles sent to Lubbock County authorities. Also report of $820 cash and a clarinet stolen from a Sonic Drive-In vehicle. Business notices state many Brownfield firms will close for Independence Day July 5 with several remaining open.
District Conservationist Duane Moss warns of trouble from early freezes and worn soil on Terry County cotton land south of Brownfield. He cites erosion, rotation with crops adding humus, and field practices, including a stubble burn, as harming conservation efforts and future yields.
The Terry County Commissioners approved Lubbock architect Atmar Atkinson to draw up plans to renovate the courthouse elevator installed in 1951. The upgrade aims to stop at the second floor and reach the basement, improving prisoner transport and access for handicapped residents, with an estimated cost near $100,000.
