County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Brock announced the tax office will stay open during the noon hour from Jan 31 through April 1 to aid vehicle registrations. Residents are urged to bring registration cards mailed from the state. registration runs Feb 1 to April 1.
L G Smith chosen Terry County Outstanding Citizen of 1976 at the Chamber of Commerce Banquet held January 22 at Brownfield High School. The award was presented by Jack Garrett. Smith received a plaque. his wife Jana got red roses. New Chamber officers were announced with Auvy McBride as president and Sam Spikes as vice president.
Comptroller Bob Bullock reports Terry County outlets posted 26,075,916 in gross sales and 10,545,034 in taxable sales for Q3 1976. Texas total gross retail sales reached 34.5 billion, up 13 percent year over year, led by Harris and Dallas counties. In-state firms totaled 32.2 billion, with 2.3 billion from out-of-state firms.
The Brownfield Housing Authority schedules a 1 30 p m meeting with Farmers Home Administration and South Plains Association of Governments reps. Alva Fink Mary Ann Bernard and Bill Chance from the F H A and Tom Lopez from SPAG will present. The group aims to begin housing for low to moderate income families and discusses building multiple units with low interest loans and an architect filing an application.
Brownfield High School names eight students selected as outstanding high school musicians for the 1977 Who’s Who in Music. Nomination reflects music ability academics service leadership and future potential under Band Director Rob Lovett.
Citizens and officials endorsed improvements to F.M. 168 from U.S. 380 east of Brownfield to F.M. 1076. The project calls for 100 feet of right of way, 451000 dollar construction, and four to six months of work starting late summer or fall. Landowners were told they may donate land with possible compensation for tenants and any needed building moves.
