A birthday celebration agenda fills the day from 7 a.m. breakfast to midnight events with a city beautification meeting and county commissioners at 10 a.m. Friends Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Olstad from North Dakota return for their annual winter visit, sharing travel tales from Brownfield to Kerrville.
Brownfield Rotary Club viewed slides titled Drugs of Abuse at the Friday meeting. Punch Nelson led the presentation noting drugs such as LSD STP marijuana opium and others and explaining their dangers to high school students. The discussion covered deliriants hallucinogens amphetamines and related risks including physical and mental damage and illegal use.
The Brownfield scene features playful crossfire as Gerald Hamilton leaves the Gold Coats for the Red Coats, while Lewis Simmonds films Our Town. The Brownfield Women’s League plans George Patterson’s beautification talk and the Jaycees announce the Distinguished Service Award Banquet with nominations due February 3.
The 121st Judicial District Court remained in session Saturday morning hearing Roy A. Key charged with misappropriation of county funds tied to a 1967-November incident after an office burglary. Judge M C Ledbetter presided as several other narcotics burglary and theft cases were heard and seven trials were postponed.
Brownfield City Council endorses General Telephone rate increases to fund a direct line to Meadow. Meadow Council already approved the changes that affect all phone types. It may be 24 months before service starts. work begins immediately.�
Terry County March of Dimes event appoints Mrs Buzz Cooper as chair and designates black chairmen for town coverage during Mothers March on Monday evening. Mrs Lewis Simmonds leads the mail-out drive with Firemen's Auxiliary aiding. a MOD road block is planned for Wednesday.
County Judge W T McKinney designated Jan 27 to 31 as Farm Bureau Week in Terry County. An enrollment drive with a 7 am breakfast at Holiday House kicks off the activities as part of Texas wide efforts to push membership beyond 110 689 in 1968. Billy Timmons serves as Terry County Farm Bureau president.
Patrick A. Keller, 28, elected vice president of Brownfield Savings and Loan Association at the Jan 14 board meeting. He replaces Kim Williams, who resigned to join First National Bank of Hattiesburg. Keller, born in Mason, previously with Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, is a Mason High School and McMurry College alumnus. He and wife Patsy Condra Keller have twin daughters Emily and Angie and attend First Christian Church.
The United Commercial Travellers of America local council 825 will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the Party House with senior counselor Robert Becker presiding. Plans include hosting C B Hughlett of Holles ton grand counselor and Lloyd K. Laster from Tyler for a Feb 13 dinner at the Holiday House. A committee will be appointed to review use of Wishing Wells funds. Members, wives and guests invited.
