Brownfield City Council approves 1982 engineering services

Brownfield City Council approves Parkhill Smith and Cooper of Lubbock to provide engineering consulting and design services for 1982 with salaries and reimbursements. They set hourly rates for engineers and architects, and discuss project costs. The meeting also transfers 11.6 acres in Old Brownfield Cemetery to the Terry County Cemetery Association and names Marvin Dawson as fire chief for 1982.

County Taxes Due By January 31 in Terry County

The deadline for paying school city and county taxes without penalty is nearing with January as the due date. J O Burnett Jr chief appraiser notes penalties increase monthly from February onward. Current plan adds one percent penalty and one percent interest monthly, reaching 18 percent in July and possibly an additional 15 percent if unpaid into summer, with delinquent bills turning over to a collection firm.

Brownfield Crime Information seeks community support in 1982

The Brownfield Crime Information Inc formed in 1981 reports 33 Crime Line calls leading to 30 arrests and $8 079 38 recovered in stolen property. Drug cases yielded 26 arrests and $15 950 25 of drugs confiscated. Fines total $1 026 and 21 years jail or probation. Donations urged to continue in 1982.

Reward Offered For Bryant Strangulation Murder Case

A $3,890 reward from Brownfield Crime Information Inc. for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible for the strangulation death of 17 year old Dianna Lynn Bryant. Bryant babysat at an apartment complex in the 900 block of North A Street on April 25 into the early hours of April 26, 1981. An unknown intruder entered the apartment and Bryant was killed with no struggle evident.

Reward Offered For Theft of White 15 Ft Trailer

A $300 reward is posted for information leading to arrest and indictment in the theft of a white 15 foot wooden bed four wheel flat bed trailer with loading skids. The trailer, possibly Oklahoma tagged, was taken from the east side of Chemical Weed Control in the 1300 block of W Stockton Street during late December 1981 or early January 1982.

Filing Opens For School Posts Feb. 1

Filing for school board positions around the county starts February 1. Brownfield, Union, Wellman, and Meadow announce openings including three posts in Brownfield. Terms filled by Don Sales, Graham Swain, and Bill Swaringen in Brownfield. Union lists two at large seats held by Ronnie Floyd and Morris Smith. Wellman has two at large seats for Delton Young and Virginia Pendergrass. Meadow notes three at large posts held by Loren Pitts, Royce Terry, and Don Bingham. Filing deadline is 30 days before the election.

County offices up for election include county commissioners precincts two and four and other key posts. Democratic and Republican primaries are set for May 1 with filing due by Feb 1. Incumbents filed for re election. Dale Brown opposes County Judge Chesshir.

Talent Contest Open For 30th Brownfield Noon Lions Show

Applications are now being accepted for the 30th Annual Brownfield Noon Lions Tournament of Talent set for 7:30 p.m. February 18 and 19 at the Middle School Auditorium. The event features three divisions and top prizes for the best entrants in each. entries are due February 16 with a 6:30 p.m. screening on February 16 at the Middle School Auditorium.

Littau Presents Free Enterprise Project at Rotary

Melody Littau of the Brownfield High School DECA chapter spoke at the Brownfield Rotary Club on her Free Enterprise project sponsored by Phillips Petroleum. She outlined appearances before local groups about the free enterprise system and her aim to compete at state and national levels for a trip to the Chicago DECA Career Development Conference. She praised the system for allowing career choice and flexibility to adjust paths as needed.

Oil and Gas Leasing Program Set for Thursday

Dr. Wayne Hayenga of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service will present a detailed oil and gas leasing program Thursday at the high school commons starting at 7 p.m. The session covers lease basics and terms such as Surface Damage Clause Pooling and royalties timing, plus key items like Lease Bonus Primary Term Drilling Obligation Delay Rental and Production Holds Lease. Sponsored by the Terry County Building Program and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
