Astonishing Bank Day Shocks Brownfield in 1960

In Brownfield Texas on January 4, 1960 two local banks posted a combined deposits total of 13 243 238 with a net gain of 873 137 for the day. First National Bank closed with 8 704 355 in deposits and Brownfield State Bank reached 4 539 083 after withdrawals. The six hour rush added over 21 million in total institutional deposits.

Terry County Retail Grows to Record 24.6 Million in 1959

The first half 1959 figures show Terry County retail sales totaling 24.6 million, up from 23.346 million a year earlier, with autos appliances and high priced items leading the rebound. The survey covers the year ending July 1 1959 and is by Standard Rate and Data Service.

Bids To Be Asked Soon For Terry County Hospital Project

Terry County Hospital plans bid requests for converting the former nurse home into 16 patient rooms. The January Board meeting, with Turner Kimmel of Butler & Kimmel and foreman Jack King present, estimated a $68 000 cost. Board president Lee Bartlett and others approved current bills for payment.

Six cases heard in Terry County Court over recent days include aggravated assault and fraud by worthless check. Judge Raymond Simms presided as Floyd Ray Billington and Jimmy Billington pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and were fined $25 plus costs.

Five Juveniles Nabbed in Bicycle Theft Ring

Police probed a string of bicycle thefts and two burglaries while arresting five juveniles whose actions reportedly solved the missing bike case. Four bikes were recovered earlier this week. a juvenile court hearing is set for January 12 before County Judge Raymond Simms.

Couple's Christmas Anniversary Spent in Kilgore Hospital

Jerre Cox and his wife of Brownfield were seriously injured in a two car crash in Kilgore on Dec 4 while visiting relatives. Mrs Cox fractured pelvis spine injuries and a dislocated shoulder. Mr Cox suffered two broken vertebrae and a broken rib. They remained hospitalized until Dec 31 and were moved to Lubbock Methodist before returning home two days later.

Census Of Scholastics Under Way In The County

Terry's annual county school census is underway under county school superintendent Elmer Brownlee. It counts children ages 6 to 17 as of Sept 1 to determine state aid of 72 dollars per student for the next school year. Delwin Webb leads Brownfield efforts. last year 3,838 students were counted.

Poll Tax Reminder As Ballot Deadline Nears May Primary

With 23 days left for ballot filings in the May 7 Democratic primary, candidates must file by Feb 1. Poll tax receipts are needed for residents over 21 but under 65, with exemptions for new 21-year-olds or those over 65. Denton Seeks First Term as Chief Justice in 7th District

Judge James G. Denton, appointed last October after the death of Chief Justice E. L. Pitts, announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the May 7 primaries. A Lubbock County native, Denton has served as judge of the 99th Judicial District and the Lubbock County Court of Law, with prior service on the State Judicial Conference executive committee.
