Record Falls Cotton Boost Feeds 1959 Brownfield Growth

Brownfield shows rapid growth with a record 2.66 million in building permits for 1959 and a 131,052 bale cotton harvest in Terry County. New homes plus a National Guard Armory and clinic addition boost the year, while postal receipts rise to 124,404 from January 1959.

Brownfield Chamber elects 27th president and expands board

O R Douglas, Brownfield public schools superintendent, was elected unanimous 27th chamber president for 1960 by the 116 member board. Paul Farrar becomes the new vice president and the executive committee grows from three to five, with Grady Goodpasture John Kendrick and Bruce C Zorns joining. The Membership Banquet is set for February 4 with speaker Jack Lacy, Amarillo Chamber executive vice president, under the theme Beautiful Bountiful Brownfield Queen City of the South Plains.

Beall Brothers 3 Inc Expands with Dunlap Stores Purchase

Brownfield gains newest department store at 511 West Main as R G Beall heads the 3 Beall Brothers 3 Inc chain. The Dunlap stores in Brownfield and Littlefield were acquired, expanding Beall’s Texas network to 42 stores. The Beall team, led by R G Beall, plans manager installations while keeping existing staff. The all Texas chain dates to 1923 with locations across Henderson Nacogdoches Mt Pleasant Longview San Augustine and more.

Wellman Rites Read for Terry County Resident Irvin Oliver

Smith Seeks Second Senate Term from West Texas

Sen Preston Smith of Lubbock announced his bid for a second term in the 28th Senatorial District. The 47 year old businessman, elected in 1956, recently joined the Texas Legislative Council and becomes the first West Texas senator on the council. He and his wife Ima live at 2808 22nd Street with children Mickey and Jan.

Local trio opens Farm & Gin Supply in Brownfield

A new farm supply store, Farm & Gin Supply Inc., opened on Seagraves Highway near Levelland Cut-Off in Brownfield. Owners Jay Harris Jerry Jones Joe Ed Sullivan and Harris brother Joe from Plainview announced stock includes fertilizers irrigation pipe insecticides veterinary and garden supplies field seeds and farm tools. The firm plans a Feb 1 formal opening though store is already open with new stock arriving weekly. Harris 32 will also serve as irrigation engineer for the business, bringing prior experience from Gifford Hill Western Co and Soil Conservation Service. Jay Harris 29 has seven years in Terry County, veteran gin operator, while Jones 33 is a local farmer and partner. Sullivan 29 runs the Terry County Farm Bureau.

Funeral rites for W. H. Kelly in Quemado Texas

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Quemado Baptist Church for W. H.
