TEC Starts Claim Service Here Thursday

The Texas Employment Commission will begin Claims Service in Brownfield on Thursday January 14 for unemployment compensation. A claims taker from the Lamesa office will be in the district courthouse on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This service is for unemployment compensation, not Social Security or Old Age Assistance, and helps applicants who are able and available for work.

West Texas Gas Becomes Pioneer Natural Gas Company

West Tex Gas Company Amarillo Dalhart Clayton Gas Companies consolidated into Pioneer Natural Gas Company effective January 1 1954. SEC approved simplification of corporate structure will yield operating advantages. Now serves about sixty cities from Clayton New Mexico to Midland and Odessa with major towns including Amarillo Lubbock and Plainview.

Cerebral Palsied Children Clinic Set for Monday

A clinic to examine cerebral palsied children will be held Monday January 18 at the Lubbock Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center on Avenue N. Specialists include Dr. E T Driscoll Dr. R Q Lewis Dr. Charles Ratcliff and other Lubbock professionals. The notice explains spastic paralysis and emphasizes early treatment benefits for infants.

Mrs. Chesshir Injured In Oklahoma Car Crash

Mrs. Minerva Chesshir of Brownfield was hospitalized in Hollis Oklahoma after an automobile crash near Hollis last week. She will move to Duncan to recover with her daughter Mrs. Howard Cost and plans to return to Brownfield in about three weeks. She suffered bruises and a minor knee fracture after losing control and driving into a plowed field while en route from Amarillo to Duncan. Cora Proctor visited her son Cpl. Dick Proctor in El Paso Christmas Eve and returned home Christmas Day.

Big Cheese Van Fire Near Terry County

A large van carrying processed cheese caught fire about three miles south of town on the way to the west coast. The driver stopped, a motorist notified the fire department, and damage ranged from 2500 to 10000 dollars with some horses saved. Fire likely started from the refrigeration motor. Also a pump house fire seven miles southeast caused notable damage, and Sunday morning a fire at Eastside Barber Shop caused smoke and water damage from a gas stove.

Buick announces a complete 1954 line featuring four series with roomier bodies, panoramic windshields, and new V-5 engines. The Special Series debuts a 150 hp V-8, Roadmaster and Super gain power to 200 and 182 hp, while Century offers a high power-to-weight 209 hp Roadmaster engine. All-steel wagons return in Century and Special. 122 to 127 inch wheelbases. Skylark restyled with 200 hp Roadmaster engine.
