Brownfield Telephone Workers Strike Ongoing at Local Exchange

Brownfield telephone personnel continue a 24 hour picket at the General Telephone Brownfield exchange as about 35 striking workers join roughly 2300 United Communications employees across six states. Officials say no local calls are delayed, while long distance congestion remains.

City buys new 750 gallon pumper for fire department

The city purchased a 750 gallon pumper for 17,632 from Mack Truck and Bus Corp of Dallas, the same bidders who supplied the other fire truck. Delivery is slated by May or earlier. Also noted is Gail Young, ten, seriously burned last June, to undergo more surgery in Galveston. readers may send get well cards.

Juvenile Charged In Brass Bushings Theft Case

A fifteen year old Terry County boy was committed to state reform school after being found guilty of theft over fifty dollars. He was one of six charged in the theft of brass bushings from a Placid Oil Company lease, with about twenty rigs affected over two to three weeks. The case moved quickly after Texas Rangers flagged the junk yard site, and four thefts netted roughly 160 dollars while replacement value exceeds ten thousand. The remaining five youths, aged 17 to 19, face district court felony charges.

Happy New Year Turns Sour For Brownfield Visitor

Otto Abbney, visiting Brownfield from Colorado, sought holiday cheer at the Brownfield Police station but ended up in a cell for drunkenness. A check showed he still owed $90 on a $100 fine, tying a rocky end to his trip home.

Michael Lee, a 7 pound 307 ounce boy, arrived at 8 47 am Jan 1 in Brownfield as the first baby of 1956. Parents are Mr and Mrs Roy Eliott of Hobbs. Terry County records show 445 births in 1955, with 277 males and 218 females. Deaths were 94 in 1955 and 81 in 1954.

Jaycees Name Brownfield Farmer Honoree Plans

Alvin Davis announces Brownfield Junior Chamber of Commerce will select the outstanding farmer of Terry county. The winner will be revealed at the Outstanding Young Man of the Year dinner January 17 in Jesse G. Randall school cafeteria. The award is part of a nationwide Jaycees program with the American Petroleum Institute. Walter Meyer chairs the local committee.

Terry County 1955 Economic Picture Shows Growth Across Measures

Brownfield posted a record 1955 with 2,736,733 in building permits, more Post Office activity, and rising utility use. Population estimates reach 8,801 to 9,376, with school enrollment around 2,365 as of January 4. Traffic fatalities totaled six, while oil and irrigation progress and a new well push total wells to 440.
