United Way Recognizes Chairmen After Campaign

The 1981 Terry County United Way Campaign wrapped with a meeting at the chamber of commerce. The goal was 32500, but workers raised 29167 after a two month drive. A 3500 contingency fund will be transferred to the operating fund, returning to agencies 100 percent of their allocations.

Appraiser Returns Excess Funds To Taxing Districts

J O Burnett Jr chief appraiser for the Terry County Appraisal District said $30000 from the 1981 budget was returned to the eight governmental bodies supporting the district because they were not needed during 1981. The funds were returned to the taxing districts.

Blood Drive Set Tuesday at Brownfield Regional Medical Center

A blood drive is scheduled for Tuesday at Brownfield Regional Medical Center to replenish blood used by 12 year old Jesse Winters at Shriner's Burn Institute Galveston. The event runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All blood types accepted.

1981 Weather in Brownfield Always Average for Region

Brownfield saw a fairly normal weather year with hot summers but no 100 degree+ heat peaks like 1980. The area had significant moisture in summer and recorded 12 days of 100 F+ highs, including 105 F on June 9 10 and 22, with a yearly low of 5 F on Feb 11 12. Damaging winds hit Terry County mid-March and again April 4 5, while golf ball sized hail damaged crops on May 29 and June 3, the latter storm causing major utility damage.

Brownfield Building Permits Top 212 Million in 1981

The City of Brownfield issued 161 building permits in 1981 totaling 2 589 005 dollars. Permits for new residences reached 19 totaling 1 241 500 dollars while commercial permits dropped to six totaling 585 883 dollars. December saw 13 permits valued at 310 550 dollars including three new residences and one new commercial building. Biggest month was September with 21 permits totaling 518 900 dollars. Local December issuances include multiple residence and garage projects with various address details.
