Crop Rotation Advised After Cotton Decline in Terry County
District Conservationist Duane Moss outlined a sharp drop in Terry County cotton yield from 581 pounds of lint per acre in 1965 to 365 in 1969 and 170 in 1980, with 107 000 bales. He cited water loss, hail, pests, climate, and especially overplanting cotton as key factors. The county had 180 000 acres of cotton and 175 000 acres of grain sorghum in 1976.

Brownfield Rebate Checks Soar in 1981 City totals
Brownfield's December sales tax rebate reached 27,094 with year end total at 416,992, a 20.19 percent increase from 1980. Texas cities posted 41.4 million in December rebates and 656 million for the year, up 17 percent from 1980. Other area towns show similar gains, including Denver City with 1981 total rebates of 182,096 and a 29 percent rise over 1980. See Rotation.

In Lamesa during December 1981 rebates amounted to $45 828 compared with $18 080 in December 1980. The 1981 total rebates were $468 791 versus $425 210 for 1980 representing about 10 percent.
Oil Boosts Economy Terry County’s 1980 Production
Terry County ranked 23rd among Texas counties in value of marketed petroleum production for 1980. Oil and gas output totaled 14.1 million barrels of crude oil valued at 305.5 million and 6.1 million Mcf of natural gas valued at 9.1 million, with royalty owners receiving 39.3 million. The Texas Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association noted overall Texas output declined slightly from 1979, but starts in 1980 rose 16 percent.

Compulsory Liability Insurance Law Takes Effect January 1st
As of January 1 1982 Texas drivers must show proof of minimum liability coverage for medical expenses of 10000 per person and 20000 for two or more, and 5000 for property damage.
