Grant funds push Terry County fitness park to start in 1997
A $12 500 grant from Texas Rural Communities will kick off Phase 1 of the Terry County Family Fitness Park in early 1997. A four year effort by local groups aims to provide a walkable, multi station park with a quarter mile trail, play areas and open space, funded by more than $15,000 in donations and ongoing community support.

City resident arrested for assaulting peace officer
A 61 year old Brownfield man, Jimmy Donald Winkles, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer after firing a shotgun in his residence late Monday night. Officers Frank Rodriguez and Allan McClure went to his home to serve warrants on Winkles for felony theft charges from Kendall County and DPS traffic warrants. Winkles answered soon after holding a .12 gauge single shot shotgun.
