Brownfield Cub center Van Garner 6'7\" was chosen as the most valuable AAA cager in the South Plains districts. He set and broke records in two varsity seasons, with a 41 point game against Sweetwater and 31 rebounds in a single night. Garner averaged 22.3 points and 20.3 rebounds per game, and posted 63.9 percent field goals along with 66.2 percent free throws. He earned all tournament honors at Slaton and Snyder in 1970.
The board of directors will meet at South Plains Health Unit to approve a March 1 opening for the Day Care Center. Funds are being arranged by a committee including John Thomas, Howard Hurd, and George Weiss. Four workers attended a Lubbock training workshop to prepare the center and donations are being sought from organizations and individuals.
Chief James E. Tippit asked the Brownfield News to publish a letter thanking Read Club Lewis Simmonds and Collier Funeral Home for aid Thursday evening. A year into Center work, an annual community meeting is set for March 23 with a nominating committee and building maintenance group named.
Wade Pearce announces sale of the Modern Steam Laundry to Ralph Murray who will take over operations March 1. Pearce retires after 26 years in Brownfield with the firm remaining at 905 Lubbock Road.
An editorial salutes Howard Henson Post No. 269 for community service. The Terry County Police Officers Appreciation Banquet featured Hon. Truman Roberts of Austin, justice of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, with Sheriff Homer Parker named outstanding officer and Capt. Lee Bartlett Jr. entertaining guests.
Brownfield News announces a Sunday March 5 issue saturation coverage with a subscription drive running through March 31. New subscribers paying for one year in advance or renewing for one year receive an 8 by 10 color portrait taken by a professional, with poses to choose from.
About three hundred citizens gathered at the American Legion Hall for the sixth annual Terry County law enforcement appreciation banquet. Sheriff Homer Parker received the Outstanding Officer for 1971 award and a plaque. his wife Shirley accepted a bouquet from Auxiliary president Edna Harden. A buffet dinner of plain or barbecue chicken and trimmings was served by Howard-Henson Post 269.
At a February 16 meeting of Goodpasture Inc shareholders and directors Ken Muldrow was elected president following Grady Goode Pasture's resignation. Other officers include Bob Boswell on the board and VP in charge of chemicals, Weldon Carden secretary and director, Olen White of Houston VP, with Goodpasture re elected as chairman.
Master Sergeant James A. LaMarr completed the Air Force recruiting course at Lackland AFB and becomes the official Air Force Recruiter for Terry County serving Lubbock Lea and Yoakum counties. He is a former Ohio native from Wapakoneta, hometown of astronaut Neil Armstrong, and resides with wife Sandra and two sons in Lubbock. He will be at Brownfield Courthouse 2 to 5 p.m. each Thursday.
