Ammons Named 1997 City Employee of the Year at Brownfield Banquet

Leon Ammons was named the 1997 City Employee of the Year at the City Banquet held in Brownfield High School Commons. City Manager Dick Fletcher praised Ammons for leadership, responsibility, and community service. The Power Plant Superintendent has served the city since 1965, is married to Ignacia, with two children, Wendy and Jeff, and was honored along with other long serving city employees. A separate item announced the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Banquet set for April 29 with TT Chancellor Montford as guest speaker.

BCISD board sets May election date

Mitch Ward reports the Brownfield Consolidated Independent School District voted to call an election for Saturday May 3 at City Hall. Seats six and seven are up for bids and Gerald Caswell and Kyle King currently hold them. The board also appointed election officials, set a May 6 canvass, arranged a bid auction, approved property sale terms, changed the March meeting date to March 10, allowed use of facilities for church and basketball groups, reviewed policy update 53, and heard a critic urge innovation after TAAS results noted Brownfield’s 36 percent pass rate.

Veterans of Foreign Wars District Seven Convention Planned

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6794 and its ladies auxiliary will host the winter District Seven Convention on February 23 at the post home on Old Lamesa Road. Registration 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. followed by a joint meeting, business sessions, and lunch with program at noon. District Commander Leroy Tedford and District Auxiliary President Lorene Beach will preside.

Terry United Way Nearing Fundraising Goal in Terry County

Terry County United Way inching toward its 38500 goal with pledges of 37242.56 about 97 percent as of Tuesday afternoon. Chairman Jody Bradley says more group presentations could push the total over the top before an Windmill Park ceremony updates the tote board to overflowing. The drive funds 12 agencies including Brownfield Meals on Wheels and Brownfield Senior Citizens.

Brownfield City Council to swear in Nancy Wade for District 5

The Brownfield City Council meets Thursday at 7:30 a.m. in City Hall to swear in Nancy Wade as the new District 5 councilwoman. Wade, a local businesswoman and longtime resident, fills the unexpired term of Bill Schoemann who resigned in January. The term ends with the May 3 General Election.
