Chief of Police J T Churchwell was honored as Brownfield Employee of the Year at Friday night’s first annual City employees banquet held at the American Legion Post. City Manager Dick Fletcher praised his dedication and service as Tony Phillips served as master of ceremonies and guests enjoyed barbecue.
Brownfield CISD trustees set May 2 as election day with positions two and four filled by Clara Garza and Rusty Andrews for three year terms. Filing deadline March 18. absentee voting April 13. Voting at School Administration Building 601 Tohoka Road 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Board also approved election judges and contract extensions through 1994 for several administrators and principals. School calendar changes include semester shift and listed holidays, work days, and inclement weather days.
Brownfield High School and Brownfield Middle School artists earned regional honors at the West Texas Scholastic Art Awards held at Texas Tech University. Gold Key finalists from Brownfield include Scott Furlow, Michael Garcia, Doug Lowes, Justin Luper, and Justin Luper, with Gold Key winners Chris Dodson and Steve Lowes. Winners advance to national judging in New York for potential scholarships.
Early voting begins this Wednesday and runs through March 6 at the County Clerk’s office ahead of the March 10 primary. Democratic ballot boxes open in eight locations including VFW Hall, School Administration Building, County Judge and Clerk offices, Wellman ISD, Enoch Stewart Party House, Church of God, and former polling sites reassigned.
Brownfield city councilmen will meet in regular session at 7 30 a m Thursday to consider amendments to authorize a paramedic level service and a fire service contract with Terry County to adjust service territories. They will also consider a refund request of landfill charges from Calvary Baptist Church and reconsider redistricting lines.
City Hall will host the mayoral and council elections on Saturday May 2 with Districts 1 2 and 3 on the ballot. Filing closes March 18 at the city secretary's office. Early voting runs April 13 through 28 8 am to 5 pm at City Hall. Incumbent Lionel Gonzales leads District 1 while Districts 2 and 3 open as Garza and Hamilton cannot seek re election. Floyd Camp seeks the mayors seat.
Farmers and ranchers in Terry County may dispose of unusable pesticides at the Farmers Cooperative Gin in O Donnell on March 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free collection, the last of four statewide events, is run by the Texas Water Commission, Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
