Brownfield Junior Stock Show highlights local youth

Brownfield FFA and 4 H youths displayed animals in the second annual Brownfield Junior Stock Show at the Terry County Barn. Twenty two lambs and seventy five hogs were shown as students demonstrated months of work. Grand champions were Bobby Burris for lambs and Roger Baker for swine, with reserve champions Billy Hays and Connie Littau respectively. Geoff Cooper won lamb showmanship and Robert Moon earned the swine showmanship award.

Terry County Stock Show Set To Open Thursday

Terry County 1985 Junior Livestock Show opens Thursday afternoon at the county arena and runs through Saturday. Weigh-in starts 1 p.m. Thursday with Dr Tim Faulkenberry. judging shifts due to school legislation begin 5 p.m. Friday for swine only and 8 a.m. Saturday for lambs and steers. Total entries include 248 animals: 189 swine, 50 lambs, nine steers. A Saturday barbecue follows judging. top 33 percent of animals sell at Fletcher and Hucheson auctioneers from Womforth. Grand and reserve champions for swine also noted.

Gramm Addresses Lincoln’s Day Dinner In Lubbock

U S Senator Phil Gramm spoke to about 250 people at Lincoln’s Day Dinner in BHS Commons, outlining 1985 priorities including free market reforms for agriculture, reducing deficits, and GOP principles. He blamed Congress for slowing Reagan’s spending cuts, urging transitional steps toward a market system and critiquing farm programs as costly failures.

West Texas Press Association 36th Annual Mid-Winter Convention Recap

The West Texas Press Association held its 36th Mid-Winter Convention at the Hilton Inn in Lubbock. Cochair Alvin Davis led a public Ranching Heritage Center tour that impressed all ages, including the author's nine year old daughters who enjoyed the two story ranch house and dugout buildings. The locomotive move to the center also drew interest.

Meadow Broncos Win District Girls Title Over Union

The Meadow Broncos clinched the district girls basketball title by beating Union 28 26. Dee Briggs scored 19, with Kris Marshall and Kelli Smith adding 10 each. Briggs led with 14 rebounds and four steals, as the Broncos advance to a playoff at Lamesa against Borden County.

Commissioners Approve Extra Funds for Brownfield Ambulance

Terry County commissioners move to add 4000 dollars to Brownfield Ambulance Service beyond the 2000 already provided by the county city and hospital district. Police Chief J T Churchwell says the money funds emergency care attendant training for 12 officers, with 13 weeks required in 1986 for EMT training. A report on a major vandalism incident at the Coleman Park Party House is also reviewed by Patrolman Jim Price who notes a weekend break in and property damage.

Party House vandalized over weekend in Brownfield

Brownfield Police and Sheriff’s Departments search for vandals after more than 500 dollars in damage to the Coleman Park Party House over the weekend. Park Patrolman Jim Price says 25 windows were smashed, blinds damaged, caliche rocks found inside, and damage set at 550 dollars. crime line notice issued for tips. The nearby Main 66 service station at 101 N 1st Street was burglarized Sunday, intruders kicked in the east door, stole 8.50 from the cash drawer and a Smith & Wesson Model 39 handgun valued at 300 dollars. BRMC Directors Set April 6 Election Date

The Terry Memorial Hospital board approved a April 6 election with incumbents Buddy Kelsay Joe Masso and Tom Fordyce. Bob Bailey’s seat remains open after his resignation letter read to the board. Absentee voting begins March 18 and ends April 2 at the hospital. Citations note the need to fund a $12,000 police training fee linked to ambulance service improvements.
