Kiwanis Club Holds Regular Meeting With Guests

The Brownfield Kiwanis Club met at noon Tuesday with president Tommy Johnson presiding. Guests included Bill Craig J T Churchwell J C Dorsett a past member re activated and new member Sidney Joe Hester. The club plans an inter club visit to Plainview Flyers Kiwanis Club Feb 19 to learn about sending boys to the Kiwanis Boys Camp at Mason. Mrs Helen Brown and Marion Snell from the National Foundation spoke on the March of Dimes operations and fund use.

Lamesa Services For Mrs. Evelyn Collins

Funeral services for Evelyn Collins 61 were held at First Presbyterian Church Lamesa with Rev. Walter Horn officiating. Burial followed at Lamesa Memorial Park. She died Monday evening after a long illness. Surviving husband Walter H. Collins one daughter Mrs Ken Kummer of Lubbock one brother Robert M. Perry of Mexico City and three grandchildren.

CAP Report On Regional Community Action Agency Feasibility

Texas Tech will present final CAP study on a 19 county South Plains regional agency serving low income residents. The meeting at 6 30 p m in the Student Union Building will include County Judge Bill McKinney and officials from Lubbock CAB. The $35628 study funded by a $31026 federal grant and $4602 local funds was directed by Dr Ted Taylor with other officials overseeing the project.

Water Importation Study Funded for Texas and New Mexico

Congressman George Mahon announced a telegram noting 892000 dollars is requested in the President's budget to continue the study of water importation into western Texas and eastern New Mexico. The study would cover the Bureau of Reclamation and the Army Engineers and fund the upcoming fiscal year.

Break-Ins Investigated Amid Local Police Activity

Terry County deputies arrest Amos Strickland on drunkenness with a $39.50 fine while held on a robbery warrant for Arizona. Lois Brooks faces forgery and passing charges and a $1,000 bond. City police probe two break-ins at a pool hall and a fabric shop along with vandalism reports and hubcap thefts. Two accidents under investigation involve a Mack truck and a Ford at First and Main and a Ford pickup and a GMC pickup at a Halliburton site.

Farmers Union leaders urge unity to push farm policy

Jay I. Naaman state president of Farmers Union spoke in Brownfield to Terry and Yoakum County members about growing corporate influence in agriculture, the need for a unified national program, a grain reserve, and a proposed National Agriculture Bargaining Act to address depressed prices. He urged farmers to join forces and press Congress for a comprehensive farm bill.

Webster enters race for Terr County Sheriff

L C Webster announces candidacy for Terr County Sheriff in the Democratic primary. A veteran peace officer, he previously served as Chief Deputy Sheriff for six years and headed Gunn Oil as assistant manager for 18 months. He holds law enforcement training from the DPS Academy and FBI finger print school.
