At Brownfield Plaza two unidentified men burglarized United Super Market at 11 30 p m Monday. A clerk heard breaking glass and saw two men remove cartons of cigarettes through the front south window. He alerted police and sheltered at back. damage estimated at 200 dollars.
Audra Foster of Grand Canyon died when her car was struck by a northbound Mercury driven by Douglas Ray Montgomery of Odessa. Montgomery, who lost control and swerved into a bar ditch, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and driving while license suspended. Billy Foster, driver of the other vehicle, was treated for facial injuries and released. Gonzalez jailed for sexual assault. bond set at $20,000.
Dr James Johnson delivered his farewell sermon on Christmas morning after three and a half years at West Tate Church of Christ. He will pastor Stanton Church of Christ and has a forthcoming book Communication for the Ministry from Resource Books Publishers in Searcey Arkansas. He has preached in Clay Lubbock San Angelo Muleshoe and Brownfield and serves as associate professor and department chair at Lubbock Christian University.
Meadow High School junior Stacy Henson, a point guard who has battled Hodgkin's disease since July, continues to play basketball with a strong, positive mindset. She endured chemotherapy with minimal side effects, missed few practices, and maintains solid averages of 13.2 points, four steals, five assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. Henson credits attitude as key to balancing treatment and sports.
Two holiday offenses were reported by Brownfield police. On December 22 near 9 p.m. unknown person(s) pulled on six strings of Christmas lights in the 600 block of East Broadway, breaking wires and bulbs worth about 125 dollars. A wreath from a residence in the 1200 block of East Hester, valued at 50 dollars, was stolen between December 21 and 22.
United Way chairman Tony Isaacs urges more donations during the giving season. The campaign has raised $15,134.73, 47 percent of the $32,000 goal, with Rocky Hamm noting it trails last year's pace. To contribute call Mrs. Hamm at the Chamber office, or Isaacs at 637-4545.
