State Comptroller Bob Bullock Thursday sent checks totaling 52 million dollars in local sales tax payments to the 980 cities that levy the one percent city sales tax for the second straight year.
Delwin Jones 59, a conservative Democrat with business ties, officially announces candidacy for the 19th U.S. Congressional seat vacated by Rep. Kent Hance. The report notes Jones’ background and the political context surrounding the race.
The Brownfield City Council passed an ordinance creating the West Texas Municipal Power Agency with eminent domain powers for transmission lines and plants, joining Lubbock Floydada Crosbyton Tulsa and Plains. it will be funded by participating cities through contracts and will have a two city minimum for formation. The meeting included a public hearing for demolishing an abandoned building at 706 Tahoka Road, with no responses from owners after a 10 month vacancy, and approval to proceed with the sale removal steps.

Brownfield Crime Information Inc offers a 300 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of suspects in multiple burglaries. Incidents span Oak Grove School over December 10 11 with school supplies stolen, a pickup inside the bus barn fence December 9 10 with tools, and Sonny's Feed and Supply December 7 83 with knives and cash stolen.
The Brownfield Chamber calls for nominations for the 1984 Outstanding Citizen. Oleta Toliver was the 1983 honoree, the first woman to win the award. Nominations must be received by January 6, with the banquet set for January 14 to install officers and review the year’s achievements.
The Executive Committee met December 9 in the Terry County Courthouse to accept the resignation of Larry D. Sims as county party chairman for personal reasons. The party will fill the unexpired term by a quorum of members present, with Holleman raised in the county, living on his 53 acre farm.
Dan Ziemer of Hammond Wisconsin and Kevin Krafft of Savanna Illinois travel with their mule Rocky as they walk toward a world record. The pair started September 1 and have logged about 2000 miles, planning a 3 1/2 year journey through Texas, New Mexico, and beyond to Australia Asia Europe and back to Wisconsin, aided by sponsors and friendly locals.
