BISD Board Accepts Audit Buys Buses

The Brownfield School Board met Monday night approving the 1981-82 audit and the purchase of two new diesel buses. The district calendar for 1983-84 was approved and Spanish instructor Oleta Toliver submitted her resignation.

Police Investigating Major Theft At Western Auto

Brownfield police report details thefts including more than $600 cash and $3,012 in cash and checks from Charlie Price's Western Auto Store. A portion recovered was in checks, cash missing from the moneybag. Additional losses include four Masonic rings valued at $850, $348 in food stamps, and $20 cash from residences. Also reported: vandalism to a 1974 Ford Gran Torino with $250 damage. Police logged 13 arrests for Tuesday to Friday, mostly public intoxication.

Commissioners Pass Employee Pay Hike in Terry County

Terry County commissioners approved an eight percent across the board salary increase for all county employees to start in January, part of the budget approved in October. They also approved $11,525 to Brownfield for 25 Brownfield Volunteer Fire Department calls, plus $729.05 dues to the South Plains Association of Governments for 1983 and renewal of delinquent tax collection contract with McCreary and Huey. A gas line right of way request on precinct two near Bynum Lane was approved.

Magic Of Christmas Show Sponsored By Evening Lions

The Evening Lions Club hosts a Magic of Christmas show at 7 p.m. Friday in the Middle School Auditorium. A clown, singers, puppets, a magic act, and Santa Claus appear. Tickets at the door are 3 for children and 4 for adults. Proceeds go to Lions Club charities. The event lasts about 90 minutes. Lion ers Chesshir report Brownfield Ambulance Service runs in November include 43 calls with 21 emergencies and 21 transfers. Most calls were within Brownfield, with some in Terry County and outside the county.

BRMC Board Examines Medicare Due Payments

Brownfield Regional Medical Center's board met at 7 p.m. to review Medicare dues, audit notes, and payables. Acting administrator Bettina Brooks cited a hospital staff shortage with four Canadian nurses to join by January, while the Joint Commission flagged nurse shortages. Auditors Mason Nickels and Warner proposed lowering a roughly $320,000 Medicare debt and tightening bookkeeping, disbursement controls, and expense reimbursement procedures, with potential dual signatures and stricter security.

Brownfield Girls win Denver City tourney in tight three wins

Brownfield High School girls basketball team improved to 8-3 by winning Denver City Tournament last weekend. They beat Morton 50-30 with Holladay 13, Patton 12. then Dunbar 41-38 led by Holladay 14, Lindsey 12, Stafford 10. and finally Denver City 46-40 with Holladay 14, Patton 8, Lindsey 8.

Brownfield City Council Sets Annexation Hearings

The Brownfield City Council holds the first of two public hearings at 8:30 a.m. on an annexation proposal for land on the southeast city fringe planned for an apartment complex. Rogers Construction Company of Levelland seeks facilities for the project, with landowner Ralph Carter also involved. The first hearing runs at 10 a.m. during the council session, with a second to be held on the annexation site.

Messiah Sunday concert at First United Methodist Church Brownfield

Brownfield residents and regional musicians present Handel's Messiah at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Brownfield First United Methodist Church with string ensemble from the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra directed by Elmer Outcast. The event features a period choir performing the Christmas portion.
