No Pass No Play rule goes into effect in Texas schools

The State Board of Education approved the No Pass No Play rule and it takes effect March 11, halting or limiting student participation in extracurriculars if grades fall. BISD Superintendent Don Hendley warns the measure will affect many students and could be tweaked when the legislature convenes in January.

Debate grows over 55 mph federal speed limit

James Roberts of the Andrews County News surveys a National Research Council panel's 262 page study on the 55 mile per hour national limit. The panel endorses the limit for many highways but suggests higher rural speeds could boost efficiency with limited safety impact, echoing West Texas and Mountain states' long contested stance.

Area cities post 28 percent rise in 1984 sales tax rebates

Statewide rebates totaling 57.4 million were mailed in December to 997 Texas cities. In the local rundown, Mort on and Lamesa show gains while Seagraves and Post show declines. Levelland and Sundown post double digit increases, and Lubbock leads with nearly 12.45 million in 1984 rebates.

Investigation ends officer cleared in Brownfield case

The Brownfield Police internal probe into a California woman's jail over a misdemeanor speeding ticket concludes with Officer cleared claims by Police Chief J T Churchwell. He says most statements show the officer acted within policy though legal issues like nonresident violator detentions may require court guidance. Brownfield Medical Center Board Talks Ambulance Building

The Brownfield Medical Center board met briefly to discuss a joint meeting with county and city officials on December 20 at 9 a.m. to open bids for an ambulance building budgeted at 75 000 dollars with each party contributing a third. President Kerry Musick was named to represent the hospital, with a stipulation allowing up to 25 000 plus 10 percent if bids exceed. The board also revised governing by laws and approved purchase of an LA 120 printer at 2150 dollars. Administrator Pat McMillan reported average monthly occupancy at 30 patients and employee counts from 158 down to 135 in the near future.

Christmas Goodfellows appeal seeks toys and funds

Time is running out for Goodfellows contributions as Christmas nears. Donate via Dick Fletcher at 218 W Main Brownfield TX 79316 or drop toys at the fire department, also at 218 W Main. Gifts fund Christmas baskets with dinner fixings and a toy for each child, benefiting needy families on Christmas Eve.

Santa to visit downtown square this Saturday

Santa Claus will be on hand at the downtown square at 3 p.m. Saturday to visit with local youngsters. Following his time on the square, he will visit the stores on Tahdka Road at about 3 30 p.m.

Commissioners Court buys Sheriff's vehicles and more

The Terry County Commissioner's Court approved purchasing two 1985 Chevrolet Impala sedans from Blacklock Chevrolet-Chrysler for 9807.90 each with trade-ins of two 1982 Ford sedans, and authorized a five year lease with the County Farm Bureau for office space at 2808 per year. The court also passed a Sesquicentennial Master Plan resolution and accepted a 20 foot Whirlpool freezer bid for the county jail at 558.
