Ted Ballard of Amarillo a Tascosa High student representing the 18th District of the American Legion won first in the Division Oratorical Contest at Brownfield High School Auditorium. Contestants from districts 16 17 198th and 21st competed for a shot at Department Finals. Judges included Jack Garrett Paula Pelt Don Turner and Virgil Crawford. It was the 31st annual Fourth Division Oratorical contest in Texas.

Funeral services for R L Graves were conducted at 4 30 in Brownfield Finer Rome Memorial Chapel with Revs Jack Garrett and Alby Cockrell officiating. Burial followed at Brownfield Cemetery. Graves died Friday morning of a heart attack at home. He was born in Montague County and married Lottie Gatewood in 1906. The couple moved to Brownfield in 1914. He left a widow and four daughters, one sister, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
