Brownfield Rotary Club heard CO Crane of Amarillo discuss the Sanford Dam and the Colorado River Project serving 11 member cities including Brownfield. Crane outlined water as a vital resource, project timing set for completion in 1967, funding via 50 annual water sale installments, and the reservoir's 17 mile length with 100 foot depth plus future recreation and wildlife benefits.
Randy Bishop, star guard and linebacker for the Brownfield Cubs, earned a spot on the Fort Worth Star Telegram Class 3A all state team. The 5 foot 11 inch senior weighs 180 pounds and joins 11 seniors honored by the selection.
Brownfield City Police logged 357 calls in November including 89 arrests and 120 traffic tickets. Of tickets 29 were hazardous, 82 non hazard, nine parking. November fines totaled 2334 dollars. The month saw 33 accidents investigated, year to date 150. Total expenses 400.52 with 24.82 for four vehicular units, 89.40 for prisoners’ food, and 52.50 for office expenses.
City Council unanimously agreed to match county funds to repair the Brownfield Boys Club building on city and county property. About 3,000 dollars in repairs are needed beyond donated labor and materials. County planned half the expense if city matched. Robert Noble Jr spoke for the club outlining aims and structure. Also approved a 1,545 dollar vehicle bid for the police department to replace a wrecked 1965 unit. A request to use Lind Street port northeast as a cotton yard was denied due to zoning. High winds sparked a series of grass and brush fires in the Brownfield area Friday and Saturday. Three alarms sounded in hours as cotton blown from trailers burned on the 137 cutoff west of town. A late-afternoon 4 23 blaze on Old Lamesa Road burned eight to ten acres of bermuda grass on the Ray Steele place two miles southeast of the city. Earlier, a morning fire near a burr pile involved waste products.
Brownfield area crime brief reports a Friday night burglary at Crabtree Machine Shop. Entry through a broken front window led to theft of two cutting torches and nine torches, totaling 235 dollars. Nearby, Owen Albert Myers arson probe and John H. Reed sought on worthless check charges. two others jailed for drunkenness during recent incidents. The accident at Hill and B Streets involved a 1959 Oldsmobile wagon and a 1959 Plymouth.
The Brownfield School Board in a special meeting approved a proposed site for a future junior high school contingent on city utility arrangements and a favorable bond vote. The tract lies between the Senior High and Oak Grove Elementary, bordered by North D Street and Fir Street Grace Street along the south. The 1,140 by 91 foot parcel totals about 24,468 acres, with Virgil Burnett owning two thirds and A T Pickett one third. Estimated site cost ranges from 61,050.05 to 63,211.00. Additional potential sites were discussed but no action taken.
Pleasant weather and sunlit days boosted Terry County ginning with 31,046 bales turned in the past week, eclipsing the prior high of 14,860 and nearing 55 percent of the 135,000 bale forecast. The tally represents nearly half the season’s total of 74,076 as the Employment Commission reports continued strong output through Friday morning.
