The Cubs host Seagraves on Tuesday night to begin the 1957 basketball season with B team action at 6 30 p m and the varsity game at 8 p m The series stands 2 1 in the Cubs favor over the Eagles in the last four years with Brownfield victories 36 34 in overtime and 57 4 while losing 45 41 to the visitors
Jim Abney a 68 year old employee from West Texas was operated on at Lubbock Methodist Hospital Friday after a broken hip from a fall while climbing steps during last week’s icy weather. He lives on Route 1 and fell last Friday, fellow workers said.
Brownfield Garden Club schedules its annual Christmas Bazaar Thursday from 2 to 6 PM at Seleta Jane Brownfield clubhouse. Members will sell homemade candles and provide centerpieces and mantle decorations with table arrangements led by Mrs Clarance Lewis. Hostesses include Mrs James King and Mrs A J Bell.
Terry County approves 11 soil conservation practices under the Great Plains program led by Henry Williamson. Federal cost shares range around 80 percent for planting, seeding, and erosion control, with applications open now to form plans for a three to ten year commitment.
County chairman J. O. Gillham reports Terry County reached 106.7 percent of its 1957 savings bond quota with $2689 in October, bringing year to date to $176,970. District 5 still trails, and Gillham urges gifts via gift bond envelopes for Christmas purchases.
Goodfellows seeks used toys and repair parts this Christmas. Donations may be left at DeWitt's Welding Service on Seagraves Highway or at J. B. Knight Farm Machinery. Stafford says they will repair any toy brought in and lists headquarters at the first business.
South Plains buyers foresee more cotton entering loan due to low quality. Late season weather has lowered grade and micronaire in Terry County, keeping demand weak. Buyers predict half the crop may be loaned, with loan prices outlined for strict low middling and low middling spot grades. Micronaire averages run around 4.0 percent.
Brownfield postmaster Joe Shelton urges residents to mail overseas parcels by December 1 and in-city mail by December 15 to ensure Christmas delivery. He warns late crops may delay service and stresses proper packing, use of strong boxes, and optional insurance or registration for valued items.
