A Brownfield Better Business group promotes shopping locally through Super Saturday events. The column notes three prior successes, a September return planned for Sept 6, with prizes, entertainment, and money saving bargains. Also references reader feedback on faulty roof vents found after recent roof work and a reader urging rerun of See Paper Ink Pg 12A.
Labor Day marks end of summer in Terry County with classes starting Monday at Meadow and Tuesday at Brownfield Union and Wellman. Thirty six new instructors are hired across the four systems, Brownfield accounts for twenty four. Me detail on new Brownfield staff follows.
The News Football Contest starts with week one picks in today’s issue on pages 6 and 7A. Twenty games, cash prizes for top three weekly finishers, top five weekly pickers placed in a safe spot, grand prize of 50 dollars for the winner, open to non employees and their families. Entry forms on page 7A, mail or bring to News office. Contest runs twelve weeks with scores and tie breaker games required. Sponsored by twenty Brownfield businesses including Brownfield State Bank and Sonic Drive-In.
Local officials secured extradition of Salvador Miranda after a multi state and Mexico pursuit. Miranda, long sought in Gaines County for Capitol Murder and Aggravated Kidnapping, is held at Gaines County Jail after the extradition papers were signed in Austin following FBI led captures and court proceedings.
Rain amounts vary across Terry County with averages around a half inch per resident reports. J B Durham and local gins in Ausborne Wheatley and Union cite about half an inch while Jack Thompson notes up to an inch in some areas and a quarter last night. Meadow Farmers Co Op Gin and Pleasant Valley Gin report a quarter and three tenths inch respectively, seeking more sun and warmer weather despite cool conditions. Harold Stice Wheatley says rainfall has been scarce for about a week, under an inch, and Foster Gin’s Bobbye Jo McClure describes drizzles and small rains with no significant totals.
The Wellman School Board in special session approved the 1986 87 tax rate and budget. The rate is 41 cents per $100 of property in the district, supporting a total estimated expenditure of 1 671 428 dollars. Donna Forbis was employed as home economics teacher.
When asked about raising the legal drinking age to 21, a respondent questions effectiveness. They believe many underage drinkers aged 19 and 20 will still obtain alcohol and that the change will not reduce youth drinking. They doubt any real impact will occur.
