Commissioners OK paving Oak Grove Street Route

Terry County commissioners gave final approval to the Brownfield School Districts request for an alternate route to Oak Grove Elementary School during Monday mornings meeting. Work on paving the route will begin this week to relieve congestion on the route.

Councilmen to consider city tax rate Thursday

Brownfield council set Thursday morning session to decide on the 1984-85 tax rate of .4825. City Manager Fletcher says growth could allow a reduction to .44-.45 with an 3 percent ceiling for changes without hearings and will present several options. The agenda also includes appointing a local citizen to the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority Board to replace L J Richardson.

BISD Board to discuss lawsuit in executive session

Brownfield’s school board spent nearly two hours in a closed session with Dallas attorney Earnest Higginbotham about a lawsuit filed by the Southwest Voter Registration Project of San Antonio on behalf of four local residents. The suit alleges BISD at large voting rules violate the 14th and 15th amendments and the Voting Rights Act. Superintendent Hendley said no comment on actions but noted a Sept 3 reply deadline. The district also faces a projected $94,000 further loss in state funds for 1986 87 due to HB 72 and a recommended tax rate rise to 67 cents per $100, with a public hearing required before adoption. The 1985 86 budget shows an $8,366,365 bottom line, up $566,000 from last year.

Identification Program Set for Children

A child identification program sponsored by the Terry County Republican Party is planned at United Super markets from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. Fingerprints and vital statistics will be kept by parents, with optional identifications for youngsters at local day care centers.

Missing 13 year old Shawn Bradley Stirs Long Trail Of Leads

Three weeks into the search for 13 year old Shawn Bradley local authorities report no solid leads. The boy was last seen July 20 with friends on three wheel vehicles near Lamesa. Calls included a sighting in a convenience store in Lamesa and a report of a body hanging from a house, later found to be sleep. Officials say multiple tips from New Mexico Artesia Loving Hobbs Carlsbad proved dead ends. Anyone with information contact Terry County Sheriff at 637-2212.

Budget Hearing Set by BRMC Board on August 28

Terry Memorial Hospital District board, with six members and Administrator Pat McMillan present, set the 1985-86 budget hearing for August 28 from 8 to 12 in the Administrator’s office. They approved a fibrometer purchase at 1658 dollars, but delayed computer equipment. A phone system bid will be reopened for comparison.

Drought disaster loans开 FMHA seeks emergency farm loans in Terry County

The Farmers Home Administration opens applications for emergency farm loans due to this summer's drought and extreme heat. Terry County is among 10 Texas counties named eligible by Secretary John R. Black. Loans cover up to 80 percent of actual losses or up to 500 000 dollars with varying interest rates. Applicants must show at least 30 percent production loss and report other program proceeds. Applications accepted until April 7, 1986, at the Brownfield FMHA office open weekdays 9 to noon and 1 to 5.
