BISD Board to discuss lawsuit in executive session
Brownfield’s school board spent nearly two hours in a closed session with Dallas attorney Earnest Higginbotham about a lawsuit filed by the Southwest Voter Registration Project of San Antonio on behalf of four local residents. The suit alleges BISD at large voting rules violate the 14th and 15th amendments and the Voting Rights Act. Superintendent Hendley said no comment on actions but noted a Sept 3 reply deadline. The district also faces a projected $94,000 further loss in state funds for 1986 87 due to HB 72 and a recommended tax rate rise to 67 cents per $100, with a public hearing required before adoption. The 1985 86 budget shows an $8,366,365 bottom line, up $566,000 from last year.
