Meadow graduates awarded $1,000 UIL scholarships

Meadow High School 1983 graduates Casey Coleman and Kim Reese receive $1,000 Clark Foundation Scholarships from the Texas Interscholastic League. Coleman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Coleman, excelled in UIL speaking events and was valedictorian. Reese, daughter of Charles and Kay Reese, excelled in UIL prose and writing events and played multiple sports. Both plan to attend Texas A&M University and Angelo State University respectively.

Hance urges strong defense and skeptical defense funding

U.S. Representative Kent Hance spoke at the Brown Field Rotary Club, arguing for a robust yet accountable national defense. He suggested Israel might have led to quicker Vietnam resolution and noted U.S. military tech superiority, while criticizing Pentagon spending and urging clarity in foreign policy and aid to El Salvador.

Brownfield ISD to discuss 1983 84 tax rate Monday night

Brownfield School Board plans a 7 p.m. meeting in the administration building to consider adopting the BISD 1983 84 budget and tax rate. The proposal suggests a tax rate of 51.7 cents per $100 valuation versus 51.5 cents in 1982 83 and a bottom line budget of 7,244,323 compared with 6,993,185 last year. The agenda also includes hiring three teachers Michael Smith Ruthie Daniel and Shirley Holloway.

Nine indictments handed down by Terry Grand Jury

The Terry County Grand Jury met in summer session Wednesday and returned nine indictments against eight individuals. Willie Roosevelt Hopkins faces counts of robbery and rape involving an 83 year old woman on July 9. Joe F. Ortiz allegedly entered a Brownfield residence with intent to commit rape on August 6. Randy Young is charged with forcing a local woman to have sexual intercourse on August 4. Juan Jose Valenzuela allegedly caused serious injury to Harold Bennett in a crash on U S 380 near the Plaza Restaurant. Juan Medina pleaded guilty to burglary of a habitation and received a five year probated sentence with restitution and court costs. A motion to revoke Gary Catlin's probation was denied.

Crime Information seeks clues in church burglary

The Brownfield Crime Information Inc offers a 300 reward for details leading to arrest and indictment in the Burglary of the Tohoka Road Church of Christ, vandalism at Joe's Body Works on 1202 Lubbock Road, and thefts including tires and spray cans during August 1983. The incidents occurred between August 4 and August 10, 1983, with unknown suspects.
