Theft and crash probe after van crashes into Brownfield home
Police investigate a 5:40 a.m. theft of a gray 1984 Ford van that plowed through a wall into a residence at 708 Yucca Lane after hitting a parked pickup at 702 Yucca. Six vehicles in Yucca and Cactus were tampered with as two suspects allegedly tried to steal cars. A reward is offered by Brownfield Crime Line for information.

County Crops Receive First Rainfall of Month
After a dry spell, measurable rain fell across Terry County on Wednesday night. Brownfield logged .54 inches, with .7 inches near Lewis Waters ten miles west, and 1.6 inches reported by Kermitt Shults in the Union area. Needmore recorded .6 inch, as countywide moisture spread.

Brownfield school system sets week for student registration
Brownfield schools announce registration for all grade levels this Tuesday at assigned campuses. Elementary students register at their campuses 8 to 4. Fourth and fifth graders at Intermediate School, sixth to eighth at Middle School, and high school at Brownfield High School with specific morning and afternoon slots. Yearsbook pictures will not be taken at registration. Parking spaces cost 10 dollars, first come, first served. New students must bring birth certificate and immunization records. A general faculty meeting is scheduled Friday at 8:15 in the Middle School Auditorium. Supply packets for PreK to 1 and 6-8 are available during registration for eight to ten dollars as a fundraiser for a Washington DC trip.

Weather blamed for Wednesday Brownfield blackout
City officials cited hot muggy conditions on Wednesday afternoon as a breaker trip at the substation near the City Power Plant causing a power outage for Brownfield exceeding 30 minutes. City Manager Dick Fletcher noted the output reached 17 600 kilowatts at 4 p.m., the highest this summer and among the record highs.

Budget meeting set Monday at Brownfield BRMC
The Brownfield Regional Medical Center Board of Directors will consider and approve the preliminary BRMC budget for 1997 98 during Monday nights meeting. The session opens at 7 p m in the hospital board room. Board members will also review a contract with North Texas Cablecom and hear administrator Mike Click’s report along with a medical staff report from Chief of Staff Dr Carl Smith.
