Cropland owners who lease land should review the 1985 farm bill conservation rules. If land is highly erodible or falls under swampbuster or sodbuster provisions, the landowner and tenant could lose most USDA program benefits by January 1, 1990 unless action is taken soon.
Brownfield Banks report higher first quarter 1987 totals headed by First National Bank and Brownfield State Bank. Assets rose to 134.4 million, deposits to 122.3 million, and loans to 30.8 million for the two institutions, versus March 31, 1986.
Meadow High School FFA held a banquet with 193 attendees. Rodney Terry won the Star Chapter Farmer Award. Cody Carroll received a $200 scholarship from American Bank of Commerce Wolfforth. Kyra Blankenship earned a $250 Meadow Co op Gin scholarship. Chance Brooks and Jason Coleman won Star Greenhand Awards. Five supporters received honorary chapter awards: Steve Marshall, Sharon Liles, Richard Parrish, Ray Gober, Bill Swaringen. Keely Carroll named Mesa District Sweetheart and will compete in San Angelo May 15-16. Also includes local conservation notice referencing 1990 and 1995 plan deadlines and sodbuster provisions.

Terry County Chief Deputy Harold Matteson will be honored at the 39th Annual Caprock Peace Officers Association meeting in Clairemont on May 14. Recognized for 15 years with the association and 28 years in law enforcement, Matteson has held multiple posts including chief of police in Spur and deputy positions in Brady and Stanton. The Clairemont gathering features a rattlesnake rodeo and barbecue at the 4-H Barn, 16 miles west of Jayton on U.S. 380.
The South Plains Public Health District sponsors an AIDS Education Seminar at Brownfield High School Little Theater starting 7:30 p.m. for 90 minutes with a Q and A session. Dr. Douglas Black notes education is essential as no cure or vaccine exists. Initial data show 200 cases in 1981, 21,000 by 1986, and projections of up to 270,000 by 1991.
