Brownfield Independent School District Board met to discuss an appeal for a zoning change, a Soccer Association request, and a letter of reasonable assurance. Enrollment stands at 2751 with 92.75 percent attendance for the fourth six weeks. lice control issues were noted. Tax assessor Burnett projected May 6 notices with tax changes, noting shift to 100 percent appraisal and anticipated rate adjustments to offset value increases.

Tech Sprinter James Mays to Speak at Brownfield Banquet

All-American Texas Tech sprinter James Mays will headline the Brownfield all-sports banquet at 6 30 p m in the high school commons. Mays, a junior, won the SWC 800 title and earned All-American status with a fourth place NCAA indoor finish, plus another All-American nod after the NCAA meet. The program, free to the public, also awards MVPs in each sport and Mr and Miss Cub honors chosen by Brownfield coaches.

Police report lists burglaries and thefts in Brownfield period

Three burglaries and four thefts headed the Brownfield Police Department offenses tally for the period from Friday, April 17 at noon to Tuesday, April 21 at noon.

Brownfield High School Band Earns UIL Contests Ratings

The Brownfield High School Band directed by Rob Lovett received a first concert rating and an excellent sight reading rating at the UIL Contest in Lubbock, adding to a previous marching contest score from last November. Band officers include Shawn Burns, president, Troy Burke, vice president, and Kenny Smith.

Needed Showers Continue To Moisten Terry County

Showers which began in the Brownfield area last week continued through Monday and Tuesday with skies cloudy at presstime. Brownfield reported 1.73 inches during April 2028. Area residents noted measurable rainfall, including Tom Montgomery near Union with about 3.0 inches in 10 days and Mrs. J L Lyons 14 miles southwest of Brownfield with about 3.3 inches, still raining Tuesday morning.

Tornado Season and Safety Rules in Texas Almanac Study

The Texas Almanac notes Texas averages 105 tornadoes yearly, mainly April to June with 60 percent in these months and 25 percent in May. Terry County lies in peak risk season with storms moving SW to NW, paths four miles long and up to 400 yards wide, sometimes 300 miles long and over a mile wide, speeds near 70 mph. Crawford Goes To Trial In Lubbock Court Tuesday

Brownfield attorney Virgil Crawford faces trial in 140th District Court Lubbock on charges of sexual relations with a 15 year old Brownfield girl. Change of venue to Lubbock with Judge Bill Sheehan presiding and Travis Ware prosecuting. Crawford is defended by Clifford Brown. Indicted May 1980 for rape of a child linked to a child born Sept 1979.
