Franks Wins Terry County Commissioner Runoff in Low Turnout

In Terry County, John Franks captured the Commissioner Precinct Four seat with 293 votes or 60.41 percent, defeating Jesse Hartman who had 193 votes. A total of 834 votes were cast from 7,089 registered voters, a 11.76 percent turnout, while Democratic and Republican runoffs selected other local candidates including Mattox for the general election and Hass, Marshall, Wittig, Bayless, and Keller in respective races.

Brisket Cook Off Sets Stage For Brownfield Banquet

The Brownfield Chamber schedules a Saturday daylong event culminating in the annual banquet at 7:30 p.m. at BHS Commons. A brisket cook-off on courthouse square features nine area businesses, judged by Herb Chesshir Dub Leigon and Robbie Montgomery, with a $200 donation in the winner’s name to Meals on Wheels, Brownfield Senior Citizens, or the Ardeth Swain Food Box. Participants include Sines Diesel GTE TST Paraffin Amoco First National Bank Halliburton Energas Dell Star and Goodpasture, plus an entertainment lineup on the square.

FHA awards top BHS Future Homemakers at banquet

The Brownfield High School Future Homemakers of America honored its top members at a Mexican fiesta held Monday in the school commons. Lee Brassfield led the FHA executive council as president with Shad Evans as vice president and Jamie Cheatham as secretary.

Noon Lions Mop and Broom Sale to Benefit Local Projects

The Brownfield Noon Lions Club will hold its Mop and Broom Sale tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the United Supermarket parking lot in Brownfield Plaza. Proceeds support local programs such as exams and glasses for the underprivileged and a quality blind project.

Hospital directors hear health care orientation

The Brownfield Regional Medical Center board held an orientation by Jim Wutts of Lubbock Methodist Hospital outlining the pressures on rural hospitals. He noted slim margins, ongoing closures, and changes in medicine and doctor practice, stressing boards must be active, set goals, hire and evaluate leaders, appoint medical staff, and oversee quality.

Judge Ryburn reports land purchase for Terry County jail site

During Monday's Commissioners Court, Judge Ryburn said final papers for 10 acres west of Brownfield from Sammy Jones were signed for a new regional jail. Preliminary drawings by Oller Engineering are due, with bids and bond financing to follow. Additional items included cemetery paving plans, Howell Lake renovations, and an $85 travel expense for a justice clerk's school. The sheriff's March report showed 18 911 calls, 17 offenses with 6 cleared, and $8,478 in stolen property.

City Council Sets Regular Session on Subdivision Plat

Brownfield City Council will meet in regular session at 7 30 Thursday morning in the City Hall Council Chamber. The council will consider a preliminary plat for a new housing subdivision.
