Voter participation was light as election day passed with eight races held in Terry County. Only four contests drew opponents, and the Brownfield Regional Medical Center Board race was among those with action. Local officials emphasized civic participation despite limited turnout.
Incumbent school board members Janice Knox and Tom Hardy were sworn in for three year terms at a Brownfield board meeting. Knox led with 187 votes and Hardy with 186. The board elected Bill Swaringen president, Knox vice president, Hardy secretary, and Rusty Andrews assistant secretary. A track meet use of Cub Stadium on April 26 was approved for St Anthony's. Construction plans include Oak Grove Elementary two rooms and cafeteria ramp work. Hospital board contest drew 216 voters. Bob Bailey won another two years with 171 votes, Minnie Hazel Bowman 181, George Williford 162, and Joe See Light.
Brownfield Middle School's Red Express Band earned top UIL honors with first division ratings in both concert and sight reading. Judges named EMI the only band to receive all first division marks. A special award acknowledged two first division ratings despite a marching division II last fall.
Over the weekend and into Tuesday two people were injured in separate traffic crashes in Brownfield. Luther Bouren was hospitalized at Brownfield Regional Medical Center after a two car collision five miles south near Lahey Gin. The other crash involved a different vehicle incident with no injuries reported.
Kerry Hester finished tenth of seventeen in the Regional Spelling Bee held in Lubbock on Saturday April 4 after thirteen rounds with the word Timorous proving her downfall. She is a Brownfield Middle School sixth grader and daughter of Mr. and Mrs Donnie Hester. D L Ford of Lubbock won and advances to the national competition in Washington DC on June 15.
The Miracle of America lecture series runs Friday 7 to 10 pm and Saturday 9 am to 4 pm in the Oak Grove School cafeteria. Cost is 35 dollars per family and includes workbooks and seven cassette tapes. Lawrence A. Wilson 26 of 501 E Broadway was arrested Saturday by Brownfield Police on rape of a child and indecency with a child charges. Bond set at 3000 on each charge. he posted bond and was released from Terry County jail. The victims are his stepchildren.
Alvin Jenkins, leader of the American agricultural movement, warned about rapid farmer decline at Brownfield High Commons. He said agriculture is the only renewable resource and noted the U.S. loses about 2,000 producers daily as farmers go broke, citing historical population context.
Latrice Pickett a Brownfield High junior was named Outstanding Vocational Industrial Clubs of America VICA student in Texas at the Dallas state convention on April 24 She also earned alternate state reporter award Other Brownfield students competed in cosmetology auto mechanics and industrial cooperative training Cosmetology winners included Melody Littau and Norma Arrezola Both earned firsts in hair design categories with Littau taking fantasy cut and Arrezola winning evening cut Their mannequins earned them American VICA degrees See Top VICA Pg 4A
In a regular session Monday Wellman School Board re elected officers Sullivan as president and Howard Moorhead as vice president while adding Barry Sims to the board. Sullivan and Sims led a four person race. The board canvassed results, approved bills, voted to buy four lots, chose a director slate for the Education Service Center, required student physicals for junior high athletics, dropped the driver education fee, and renewed teachers contracts.
An Artesia New Mexico woman Ruth B Dunn aged 69 died in a one vehicle crash four miles west of Artesia on the Plains Highway. Brownfield Police Department reported eleven arrests from Friday noon, April 3, to Tuesday noon, April 7. Five people were jailed for public intoxication, one man for public intoxication and disorderly conduct, and other arrests included driving while license is suspended. See Police Arrest. Pg. 4A
