March Permits Show Drop In Activity In Brownfield

The city issued 12 building permits in March totaling 181 550 down from February 314 333. Major permits include two new residences at 64 000 each. Notable filings include J C Smith 64 000 new residence 1711 E Hester and 1713 Carter along with storage and porch works for several residents.

Police Report Two Injured In Brownfield Mishaps

Brownfield police logged two injury accidents from April 1 to 3 near Fir and Tohoka Road. Bruce King sustained injuries on a 1972 Honda motorcycle and Estafana Salas Martinez was injured when her 1967 Chevrolet collided with a 1976 Ford pickup. Also reported were four thefts including bolts and shingles. A handgun was stolen from a vehicle parked at a location in Brownfield.

Brownfield council OKs 1981 82 budget and ambulance bid

Brownfield City Council approved the 1981 82 budget with a 12.3 percent revenue expenditu re increase and adopted an ordinance securing funds. A bid on a new ambulance for the Brownfield Ambulance Service was accepted. The water sewer and garbage rate hikes fund a new sewerage treatment plant and other services. City Manager Jake Geron noted the need to drill new wells due to lake Mere dith reductions. Councilman Steve Sandlin defended the rate increases as necessary, not profit driven.

Miracle of America Lecture Series Set

The Miracle of American lecture series at Oak Grove school cafeteria runs Friday 7 pm to 10 pm and Saturday 9 am to 4 pm. Co sponsored by Terry County Freedom Forum and Terry County Farm Bureau. Freeman Institute presents the constitutional history from Anglo Saxons to the 1787 convention. Tuition 35 dollars per family includes text workbooks and seven cassette tapes. Reward Offered for Mason Oil burglary information

Brownfield Crime Information Inc offers a 300 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons involved in the Mason Oil Company burglary at 1406 Lubbock Road. The crime occurred between Friday October 24 1980 and Monday October 27 1980. Stolen tires include six H R 70 15, six G R 70 15, and five L R 70 15 tires.

Reward Offered for Theft of Grants Geophysical Pickup

A $300 reward is offered for information leading to the recovery of a Grants Geophysical Corporation pickup stolen from 1107 Stockton in Brownfield on March 11, 1981. The vehicle was recovered but 77 geophone strings and 7 cables remain missing. Authorities seek tips identifying involved individuals.

Reward Offered for Dos Amigos Club Burglary Leads

A $300 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those involved in the March 31 1981 burglary of the Dos Amigos Club at 208 North 6th Street. Entry was gained through the back door. cash was taken from two pool tables, a jukebox, and from the cigarette machine. A black laundry bag may have contained the loot.

Suspect Declared Competent in 1980 Slaying Case

Victor Cantu of Levelland, charged in the March 3, 1980 slaying of Pablo Martinez, has been returned to Terry County jail. Cantu had been at Rusk State Hospital since December 1980 after being deemed mentally competent to stand trial. Martinez was found shot in the face in Brownfield area. A trial date has not been set.

Brownfield and Wellman Trustees Schedule Monday Meetings

Brownfield and Wellman school boards set Monday sessions to organize new boards after Saturday’s election. Brownfield meets at 7 a.m. for a breakfast in the Admin Building, Wellman at 7 p.m. in their Board Room. They will canvass votes, swear in newcomers, and reorganize.
