Last weekend Brownfield Intermediate School students held a jump-a-thon for the American Heart Association and collected $2964.67. A total of 139 students participated led by Lauri Robertson who raised $150.60. The top fundraising class was Paula Jones's first period fourth grade aided by Janie Mc Clure, contributing $590.35.
Brownfield voters defeated a smoking ordinance by 1038 to 335 after a high turnout, keeping public places smoky. The same election saw council races with incumbents Graham Swain and Doyle Simpson winning, plus at large winners Doug Ryburn and Bob Davis. Other school board races across the county drew varied votes and turnout.
Brownfield Middle School's Red Express band announces a Thursday 7:30 p.m. parents concert in the middle school auditorium lasting about 40 minutes, followed by a Saturday UIL South Zone Class C concert and sight-reading contest at Frenship junior high auditorium. The band will perform at 2 p.m. with sight-reading beginning 2:30 p.m. Director Willie Hintze invites all to attend.
The city council will swear in four newly elected members Graham Swain Doyle Simpson Bob Davis and Doug Ryburn for two year terms and elect a mayor pro tem. An appointment to replace Hector Garcia will be considered along with zoning board members and a franchise with General Telephone. The agenda includes ambulance contract renewal an animal pound and vendor fee increase and approval of assessment rolls with a public hearing set.
Lance Ivie, 12, son of Don and Mrs. Ivie, placed fourth in the Boys 9-12 division at the Pepsi/NBA Hotshot National Finals in Los Angeles. He was eliminated in the first round, with only the top two advancing, after competing against regional representatives from Denver Houston Kansas City Phoenix San Antonio and Utah. Ivie was flown to the nationals by Pepsi along with his father, who praised the event's effort to attract young players.
A pit bulldog that entered a southeast Brownsfield residence, killed a poodle, and forced entry to a utility room was removed to a Deming New Mexico stud ranch. Police and the dog warden handled the incident, and the owners agreed to keep the animal out of the city after paying pound fees. The dog’s relocation follows the Police Chief JF Churchwell’s recommendation amid concerns for local children and nearby Colonial Heights Elementary School.
