Paving Petition Deadline Extended and City Projects

The city extended paving petition deadlines to April 10 after requests. About 40 blocks signed for paving this summer. petitions must be turned in to City Secretary Jake Geron by the 10th. Contracts include Clowe and Cowan for two water wells and pumps at 11,161.08 and Hodgson for water works at 18,102. Population estimate set at 9,371 by the Chamber of Commerce with signs planned at city entrances.

Wellman Students Debate Delinquency Panel

Wellman High School students and Toastmasters members held a Thursday night panel on Youth Takes a Stand to define juvenile delinquency discuss its causes and outline action to combat the issue. Alfred Tittle Jr Dessie Oliver Dalton Smith and Beryl Parker were on the student group with Bill Neel Harold Simms Aubrey Cates and Wade Yandell making up the rest.

Bid Given for Two New School Buildings in Brownfield

W B Abbott Jr of Lubbock won the $628 770 contract for Brownfield elementary and high school auditorium work. He plans to order steel immediately and begin construction in about 30 days with the elementary building ready for mid term next January and the high school addition by 1956. The project raises Brownfield’s 1954 total toward 1 076 795 with permits in March totaling 172 600 and 1 071 620 including new construction.

County Park Bond Election Set for April 16 in Terry County

Voters will decide on a 175000 dollar county park bond to fund the 44 acre Coleman Park adjoining tract and a possible swimming pool. A second ballot item asks voters to approve a five cent tax levy for county parks or retire the bond with funds from Permanent Improvement.

School And City Elections To Be Held This Week

School trustee and city elections are scheduled this week with the school vote on Saturday and city ballots on Tuesday at City Hall. Incumbents Aldermen Sam Murphy and Virgil Travis seek re election, James Harley Dallas runs for the third council seat, and write in votes may decide Union and Meadow trustees. In Meadow eight candidates contend for three seats, while Brownfield and Wellman see multiple re election bids and precinct races on the County school board. Elections occur at local schools except Brownfield, where voting is at the courthouse.

Juvenile Burglar 13 Year Old Compiles Record

A 13 year old boy in Terry county faces juvenile court after a three month spree breaking into nearly 30 business houses. Police traced the youth after a warehouse incident revealed a wider pattern of delinquency. He had been a good student prior to 1955 and had no prior trouble.

March Completions and New Locations in Terry County

Four new locations and two completions in Terry county last week raise March totals to nine each. Ten wildcats and eight field rigs are active. tests span Honolulu Oil Corp Nos. 1 B Ella Covington and Texas Co. No. 1 A. H. Herring, with depth reads given in lime and chert. Other drillers include Tri-Service Drilling Co and J C Williamson interests. four new locations culminate in Prentice and Statex-Cisco fields.

Union Good Friday Service Planned

Brownfield merchants and the Chamber of Commerce vote on two polls. A three hour Union Good Friday service will run from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on Friday April 8 with 14 churches represented by the Brownfield Ministerial Alliance.
