Criminal cases set for trial in Hempstead district court

District Court in Hempstead convened with Judge J L Manery presiding. The grand jury was sworn and empaneled with J B Sorsby as foreman. Plea entered by George Daniels in a DWI case and a one year suspended sentence imposed. Upcoming docket lists multiple burglaries thefts and assaults from March 27 to 29 with numerous defendants.

Birthday Surprise for Mrs Martha Wilpitz at Pattison

Friends and relatives held a birthday surprise Monday night at her Pattison home. About sixty guests attended as Mrs Wilpitz, despite her advanced age, joined in the celebration with enthusiasm and many dishes were enjoyed by all.

Lundy Couple Attend Examinations at Hempstead

Mr and Mrs J H Lundy teachers at Pattison Public School travelled to Hempstead last Tuesday for final exams in the second quarter extension work from Sam Houston State Teachers College. Lundy notes fifteen or twenty students enrolled in the last quarter and the new quarter began Tuesday this week with a course on Philosophy of Education and International Relations.

Hempstead Deputy Arrests Negro in Millican Turkey Theft Case

Deputy Sheriff F C Blumberg and Sheriff Horace Reed arrested Joe Littleton, a colored man, in Millican Texas for turkey theft. Littleton had evaded arrest since 1931 after being indicted in three turkey thefts and a church burglary. His co-defendant Charlie Potts was arrested nearby two weeks earlier.

Rail service cuts reduce local passenger train

On Wednesday the M E T removed local passenger train number 16 after a Texas Railroad Commission petition granted last week in Austin. Now only 1:05 p m northbound and 6:05 p m southbound service remains, with R J Danshack's position abolished and unemployment resulting. The move reflects drastic rail cost curtailment amid dwindling passenger traffic and sparse day-coach ridership.

Injury at gravel pit sidelines Arley Festervan

Arley Festervan formerly of Brookshire now working at a gravel pit in eHarne suffered a serious lower limb injury last week when caught in machinery at his job. He was transported to St Joseph's Hospital in Houston by visitor Sylvan Witte who intervened to help.

Is 3.2 beer real beer or near beer

Harvey Conover of Modern Brewery writes to the Dallas Chamber of Commerce clarifying alcohol content of historic beer brands and noting that 3.2 per cent beer remains legally acceptable until the Eighteenth Amendment is repealed. He cites Schlitz Pale at 8.15 per cent weight and other brands ranging from 2.55 to 2.97 per cent.

Dairy Owner Dies In Train Truck Crash Near Katy

Luther F. Maness a 35 year old dairy owner living near Katy died after his milk truck was struck by a passenger train one mile east of Katy. He was thrown from the vehicle and died about an hour later in Katy. Maness leaves a wife four children and two brothers. Funeral services were held at Katy Cemetery.

Prominent Lady of Hempstead Died

Pauline Meyer Menke age 70 died at her son J J Menke's home 187 Taft Houston Tuesday. She had lived in Waller County 40 years making Hempstead home. Last rites were at Hempstead residence 3 p m Thursday. Survived by five sons T M Menke C H E P LL and W M Menke Hempstead and husband C A Menke. Funeral attended by many friends from this end of the county.
