Jokes about Woodcock misheard as lasswood, a couple discussing a fiancé and snoring, boy Johnny puzzled by polar exploration, and a back-and-forth about a watch changing hands. A Highway of Commerce

Mr. Thomas Speed recounts in The Wilderness Road that before 1792 two main East to West routes existed. One ran Philadelphia to Pittsburgh then along the Ohio River, the other from Baltimore through Cumberland Gap into Virginia. The Cumberland road became the National Turnpike, a major east west highway. It spurred connected routes via Virginia, the Carolinas, and East Tennessee, and served as a key cattle, hog, and horse trade path from Kentucky to Atlantic markets with staging between Cincinnati and Charleston through Cumberland Gap.
