Mississippi Prosperity Foretells Bright New Year

The Picayune’s Jackson correspondent notes record industrial growth in Mississippi with more new enterprises chartered in the last year than ever before. Banks report strong collateral for loans, Western funds backing local bank redis counts, and cotton moved largely with home capital. The piece urges education as the republic’s lifeblood, citing Governor McKean’s pledge that God and liberty require citizen schooling and state investment in schools to sustain the nation.

His younger brother, who witnessed the incident, reported the shooting to local authorities. Bagents survived, though shot from the rear with No 4 shot. An inquest found him alive, and statements from the brothers described three white attackers as they passed them on the road. Aware neighbors note Bagents’s bad reputation.
