Fires Ravage Home And Buildings In Early Chicago

A resident recalls multiple blazes starting July 7, 1897, burning a building at 3742 Grand Boulevard and the surrounding area. The fires forced relocation to Chicago, loss of furniture, and repeated rebuilds including a later fire near the Odd Fellows building and village structures. The speaker notes she is the last survivor still carrying on.

Parker Obt. Obtains June continuance in fraud case

Parker obtained a continuance to June 14 in a petition for injunction against Postmaster Charles W. Warley of the LaGrange post office. The filing seeks to halt the government fraud order issued April 6 and to challenge the return of impounded church mail stamped Fraudulent. Parker argued for a hearing before postal authorities in Washington, claiming religious persecution and bias. The request was granted to say ten at that time.

Final Meet Planned Of Gross PTA May 17

The Gross school PTA will hold its final meeting of the year on Monday May 17 in the small auditorium. A music program is planned in the evening with annual reports and installation of new officers. Details for the district survey will be announced. A social hour and refreshments are promised by the committee. The fourth and fifth grades will hostesses.

The East Side center Coordinating Council hosted a banquet for Charlie Baldwin at Lyons Township High School area. Guests included Gordon principal Lyons, Chuck Bennett, Greg Sloan, Roy Webb, Chuck Cassell. former LTHS athletes Bernard Simms and Lawrence Williams attended. Duke Slater spoke. Joseph Norris led ceremonies. The council presented Baldwin with a traveling cap. gifts included a pen and pencil set and an tie clasp. Proceeds, after bills, go to the council treasury.

Plan 9 Day SDA Meet At Broadview

Theodore Carcich president of the Indiana conference of Seventh day Adventists announces a nine day assembly starting June 11 at Broadview Academy grounds. About 2000 attendees nightly from Brookfield and across the state will hear leaders in the academy auditorium with children’s meetings in three large tents conducted by a trained corps led by C R French and F F Bush.

Final Report Given On Red Cross Fund Drive in Brookfield

Brookfield Red Cross fund drive chairwoman Mrs. Alvert Janda said cash and credits to Chicago Red Cross brought Brookfield total to 4 559.12 or 157 of quota. Auditor W. A. Rowland compiled figures showing earlier cash of 2 840.27, additions of 47.50, and credits from headquarters totaling 2 596.7 with further credits to Brookfield from Electro Motive employees and local groups. Total proceeds reached 4 857.17. An appreciation party was held April 27 at Gross School with certificates awarded by Mrs. Boyer and John Clifton. some workers received certificates later from area chairmen.

A journalism room in LTHS new addition is named one of Chicago area’s 30 finest modern installations by the Illuminating Engineering Society. A slide photograph of the room was shown to 400 engineers in Chicago last Friday. C B Pederson, program chair, visited the high school to compare lighting with the old room and presented a paper.
