Maxwell Donald Pender, 12, son of Ernest and Lorraine Pender of Forest Avenue, died at St. Francis Hospital Wichita after poliomyelitis. Funeral Monday at Brookfield Methodist Church with interment in La Grange cemetery. Born Sept 16 1938 in Wichita, he lived in Brookfield Broadview La Grange area, attended Broadview Academy, baptized 1946, and had dream of a life in music and sports. He leaves parents, twin sisters Candace and Constance, grandparents, and many relatives.

Auto Crash Belated Honeymoon Ends in Iowa
Henry Toenjes and his wife of Rosemere were injured when their auto was struck by a truck near Colfax Iowa last week. They had been on a belated honeymoon after his discharge from the Navy and were returning from Yellowstone Park on a vacation from Carney's bakery in La Grange. They were taken to Colfax Hospital and later to Elmhurst Hospital by ambulance.

The Nedved family from 8637 Rockefeller returned from a month long camping trip at Peninsula State Park, 280 miles from Chicago. They built a coffin like trailer shelter, raised 8 feet, with canvas sides, orange crate pantry, and a large cook stove. They met Brookfield neighbors, learned swimming and fishing, and made many friends. A Milwaukee teacher helped with cooking, water was rationed, and a desert island excursion yielded a weed remedy for poison ivy. The family plans to return next year. Mr and Mrs Stanley Prokopek Jr of 8924 Southview Ave. recently completed a two week auto tour of the West, totaling about 3000 miles through Minnesota, South Dakota, viewing Badlands, Wind Cave, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Edward Feely post 190 of the American Legion announced its annual carnival will open August 26 at the Brookfield intersection of Fairview and Brookfield avenues. Commander Lester Barry leads the committee with Joe Soderholm, Dave Potts, Gunnar Fristrom and Herman Franke. Prizes include a 1946 Oldsmobile fourdoor sedan, Frigidaire, Philco radio, Evinrude motor, chair, bicycle, Mixmaster and apartment washing machine. The eight major awards are drawn on August 31, with a $10 nightly prize for a present attendee. The post, now over 300 members, hopes for strong participation and good weather.
