Federal Control of Packers Stock Yards Upheld by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court ruled the Packers and Stockyards Act of 1921 constitutional, affirming federal regulation of stock yards as part of interstate commerce. The decision held stock yards as conduits for shipments, like public utilities, with Chief Justice Hughes delivering the majority opinion and Justices McReynolds and Day in dissent. The case also touched on the emergency fleet corporation’s status and a separate dispute over the Red River bed between Texas and Oklahoma.
