The fourth annual Hiestand family reunion took place at Samuel Odle's home south of Brook on Sunday August 8 with over sixty attendees. After dinner there was music and games of ball and horseshoes enjoyed by all, followed by visits from numerous Hiestand relatives from Kentland Rensselaer Bremen Goodland and Brook. John Smith and family and John Cox and family returned from a trip to French Lick with John reporting an exceptionally large peach crop in that region.
Miss Sara Jones and Miss Ann Anderson attended Newton County events while Velma Carpenter began a month long vacation. First Aid training occurred for Kentland Camp Fire Girls and Brook Girl Scouts. Home Hygiene and Nursing classes at Colfax and Rose Lawn finished. Loan closets for sick room supplies opened in Colfax Roselawn Lake Village Morocco Kentland and Brook. May saw 627 Indiana infants die before age one and 70 percent of those deaths are preventable. The Infant and Child Hygiene Division with Red Cross will visit Newton County this fall with an examining truck. Dr Ada Sweitzer will lecture on child care and community health. The Newton County Anti Tuberculosis Society bought two tents to lend to TB patients. 299 people died from tuberculosis in Indiana in May.
