New York May 81 The Continental Oil Company ends direct operation of service stations and sells Conoco gasoline oils and greases only through independent local dealers. Company president Dan Moran says dealers own or lease stations, becoming permanent community merchants and reducing company administrative headaches.
Red spiders are damaging cotton, blamed on dry weather, wind, and cool nights. Look for whitish patches on older leaves and observe tiny red spiders moving to young leaves. Dry conditions boost multiplication. hard showers curb infestation. Control with finely ground sulphur dust.
County agents report rising farm poultry profits as culling low producers and removing disease reactors boost flocks. King County notes seven large commercial flocks and credit for increased production, while Kendall farmers cut nine flocks from 1,009 to 689 hens to lower feed costs and raise profits. A tenant farmer builds a portable hen house for 200 hens and emphasizes diversification beyond cotton. Mrs. D. M. Kern reports a year with no losses from chicken pox after vaccinating pullets annually.
County home demonstration agents report Pecos and Fort Stockton club members making home improvements with minimal cash. Two Pecos residents scoured wool into bats for comforts, while another member removed enamel from furniture using paint remover and gasoline. A $3.25 closet project in Runnels county adds storage and pantry space.
Notice declares the firm Gideon and Luttrell dissolved by mutual consent on January 18 1936. J D Luttrell of Coke County Texas and E R Gideon of Midland County Texas were partners.
Cotton flea hoppers are plentiful on horsemint in the lower state. As horsemint dries near the end of May the insects are expected to migrate to cotton in large numbers causing heavy damage. Farmers should be ready to apply sulfur immediately and repeatedly as soon as counts reach sufficiency.
A major grasshopper outbreak similar to 1924 endangers a large portion of the state, per R. R. Reppert, extension service entomologist. Egg counts indicate a looming pest pressure threatening fields and pastures statewide.
County agents warn that grasshopper swarms will grow worse than predicted. Reppert cites a state committee under his leadership seeking 150 carloads of federal mash material, with Congress approving a million dollars for Texas control. A 1924 program saved over seven million dollars in agriculture costs. Federal mash blends bran sawdust arsenic with water, distributed via county agents.
