The article notes that married men may join the Flying Cadets and enter the Army Air Corps. It states dependents can be supported by pay, room, board, and clothing. the change ends the previous prohibition on married applicants. The Tuskegee Institute reports in 1941 there were four lynchings across the United States. The Department of Records and Research compiled data shows four persons were lynched during the year.
A 1941 report notes 21 people saved from lynch mobs, all African American. Of 19 police protection incidents, 18 occurred in southern states, with one in the north. One case used armed force. 1 white man and 20 black men were spared. Offenses included attempted rape, theft, altercation, and working on a discharged job. States with lynchings: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina each with one case. A jailed suspect was taken from custody in one instance.
